1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Hi Gang,

Spent a few hours at the lab this evening...

Mike designed a simple MDF mount for the yokes in the shape of the original ESB style mounts - a little filler and sanding and we're half way there...

Tony and I then set our sights on getting the seats posts mounted - we only got one done

Earlier today I had an idea for the panel lights... What if I cut clear thin acrylic "donuts" and place them on the bottom of the lens using clear adhesive - Jessie was nice enough to cut the acrylic for me (I actually do stuff while I'm at the lab! ;))

Hey T,

Excellent! I love the look of those old railroad lenses. There's just something about old school glass... If you happen to run across ANY that are between 2-2.25" in diam - GRAB THEM! lol ;)

There's a big show coming up in April I'm going to in Illinois. I'll keep my eyes open.
EDIT: A quick look on eBay, I didn't see anything less than 3 - 3.5 in.

Great idea with the lights! It's those little details that you hardly notice are "wrong" until you make them "right" and suddenly it clicks. Very, very cool.

Hi V,

Welcome to the thread... Thank so much for the kind words. Hopefully you'll stay tuned for more updates. It's about to get chaotic!

Wow i think you nailed it with the lights, looks very convincing to me.
You guys do indeed win the internet.

Hi SB,

Thanks! I'm really happy with how the panel light turned out. I spent another late night at the lab. Part of the evening was spent getting the rest of the panel lights to match the first lens. I'm using clear silicone so I had to wait a few hours for it set before installing them back into place.

Motion carried.

If the motion carries... what choice to do I have? ;) I'm going to laser cut a "94" sign using MDF. :)

Hey Ret!

Even as akid, I loved those panel lights. I wish we could locate some of them. UGH... But I'm happy with the clear acrylic solution. Kudos to Jessie for cutting them on the laser cutter while I struggled with the seat posts...

Hi Gang,

As I mentioned it was another late night. Daniel returned from vacation and after a few hours at the lab, he invited Scott and me over to the local Maker's Club. Daniel told me the club was getting ready for their yearly Spring Cleaning. He told me and Scott to essentially have fun and get what we needed... We found ourselves in greeblie heaven! Scott is really big in the original 70s/80s arcade games and was smiling ear to ear - he collects and restores vintage arcade cabinets/games. We didn't get out until 1:00am

OK... now for the bad/interesting news... For almost an hour I struggled with positioning the cockpit seat posts. This wasn't like the "Stand Alone" platform where I could place them anywhere and then a person could just swivel out of the seat. There are several obstacles preventing ANYBODY from getting in and out of the seat - console body, console instrument panel and the nose panel(s). No matter where I placed the seat post, NOTHING would work. NOBODY could sit down.

I grabbed my ANH DVD. I remembered the scene where, after escaping the Death Star, Han realizes they are being followed by the TIE fighters and he backs out of the chair. Jessie, Scott and I watched this particular scene 20-30 times. We finally realized that the cockpit chairs are not simple seat posts - they are either mounted to a curved seat track or mounted to a swivel arm that not only backs away from the console but also turns away from the console toward the side panels... UGH...

Note how the chair backs away and curves to the left...

Note the gap between the chair and the console - it MUST be mounted to either a track or a swivel arm

Unless we don't let people sit in the seats (Really?), the seats cannot be mounted until a solution is found. Ideas?

Hmmmm...for the shooting cockpit I assume they used something simple like a dolly track or even casters? What about using a swivel arm with the pivot end using one chair swivel and then casters under the chair to support the weight and then another chair swivel under the chair?

Oooh, or something like this. It would be prebuit and quite sturdy! Plus if you had a school/office surplus store you might be able to pick a couple up on the cheap!

Hey PSI,

That is EXACTLY what I'm thinking might work! EXCELLENT! Thank you so much!

Now... what the heck are those things called? lol
