Bigturc's Ironman Mark3 Build

Are the rib details going to move? They look awesome, I'm just not sure how they're supposed to "work".

Will you be selling casts of the unibeam? It looks great!

Hey there,
Nah .. those rib details are not gonna move .. they're a one piece with the rail.

As for the unibeam, that would really be a pain to cast .. but I might print another one so that one will probably go! ;)

Foot [Zabana @ 110%]

This foot is from Zabana's file, it was scaled by 10% and I've got size 12 shoes. If I find a show that is tight all around the foot .. it'll be perfect!!! It leaves a little space all around for some padding if you don't want to use a shoe in there! The shoe in it's current pic state is fiberglassed inside with Smooth-On EpoxAmite! Very solid model!!!

Comparison:

2 pieces/slip over show - Dancing fool
3 pieces high heel (bigger model) - ROBO
2 pieces accurate - Zabana

Hi, I'm currently gathering all the parts by pepakura to start my own build, and I have to say I think what you doing is amazing! is there any chance you have the link for Zabana's boots? I have looked for it all through this thread but I cant find it I must be blind, could you post it on here for me?

Thanks!

Lewis

Bigturc,

Awesome work first off!! Was wondering if you could post a pic of whatever it is you're using to line the inside of the pieces. I use fiberglass resin without the fiber sheets, but it turns out brownish in color. I assume you're using card stock to pep with? As in your pics here, the stuff (inside) seems to be pure white. I saw the pic you posted of the body filler and putty, i'm using bondo brand. Really curious what you're using as the stiffener though, also is it a 2 part mix like the rest and does it stink like hell like the fiberglass?

Hi Mossman,

I use SmoothOn Epoxamite over 110lbs card stock, which is epoxy based as you might have guessed, instead of the smelly polyester based resin that everyone is using since it's super cheap to buy. Epoxamite is odorless because I was doing everything in my condo but is a lot more expansive, but it was way worth it in the end. even though I'm now in a house, I'll probably continue using it anyway.

As for the filler, I use Evercoat Gold .. I'm surprised I don't have a pic of the gallon somewhere in the thread, this product was suggested by so many that I had to try it, and it's day and night compared to the cheap bondo that everyone is using. it applies like butter, and sands wonderfully. But yeah, it's still polyester based, so it stinks and smells like ****. :)

No gel coat, see post above :thumbsup

Looks fantastic!! what's the purpose of the gel coat? and which brand did you use?

I made the switch to epoximite 101 fast and I like it very much! I think it was Al that enticed me over to that product. I wish it were a little faster to prevent sag on the pepakura though. Use plenty of struts, shims and temporary supports and you will be ok though, but that's the same with resin any ways. That is the only advantage of auto resin in my book. It does cure quicker, but only just.

Thanks so much for the info. Not worried about making the switch if it pays off in the long run. Are you using these pieces to use as molds or are they strong enough to use as the finished product. Plan on making a mold for the helmet but not ready to tackle molding every piece unless it's necessary. Also meant to ask how many coats do you use for finished strength?

Nope, no progress at all, it's still boxed up!! All my free time goes into the new house!!! I'm quite jealous of your progress on both your suits .. your War Machine is really awesome plus the fact that you wear it perfectly!

My next thread will be to show the WIP house, how interesting could that be here huh? :)

LOL, Well, I 'd like to see the house :)

Well, to fill that much needed mk3 Gap we've both left, I'l be updating my thread pretty soon, these thing do take time though and it's finding that time, that much I do know.
Look forward to seeing what you do with the parts you have Al.

Stay frosty!

Back from the dead .. this project just got resuscitated!!!
I intend to finish at least the upper body in the next weeks!

All parts from this point on will be molded...

More development on this build! I'm finally able to move on this!!! The COD is by far the trickies piece of the suit .. unless you have a child's ass, there's not a lot of chances to fit in there. So you have to deform the model to fit the larger human ass BUT keep a proper ratio between the chest piece and the abs that'll go over that. Once I'm sure the cod will fit properly, I'll print the adjusted abs to fit with it.

Cod in relation with the lower spine:

Once the cod will be final and the abs will be printed, I'll glue and reinforce everything together along with the spine then do a mold of the whole thing.
In the meantime, work has begun on the legs and I my next update should be pretty interesting! ;)

For those interested, these parts are all printed on an Ultimaker II.
