Mainly a games console is a statement that's veracity is entirely up to who is using it.
A 360 has several functions beyond playing games. Some of which will not work without an internet connection.
An XB1 has several functions beyond playing games, some of which will work without a connection to the internet.
Your complaint seems to be that this machine is not what you expect out of a new machine, and that microsoft is making a horrendous decision by not meeting your expectations. I suggest you adjust your expectations accordingly, because microsoft doesn't care about them. If you want a thing that just plays games, no questions asked, there are other machines that will do that and you won't hurt microsoft's feelings by using one of them.
Making the connection required every 24 hours for gaming will not end up hurting them much in the long run, and the more connected the world gets the less of an issue it will be for everyone. Which is why I'm fine with embracing it now to go forward.
And as far as my sarcasm goes, I displayed an edit almost immediately following my 'magic' statement, letting it be known that I may have misread you. But I stand by my comment that a smart tv when nerfed by no internet connectivity isn't that smart.
EDIT for clarity's sake:
I made the reference to things that still worked when offline purely to display that the machine does not 'brick' when unconnected, as so many have hyperbolized. I'm not saying those are ideal reasons to buy or own the damn thing :lol
