Tron Recognizer Foamboard Build

For those who watch Aztec Dummy, he recently completed a 3D printed model of a gorgeous Tron Recognizer and it immediately became part of my must-have list.

Using reference pictures, I scaled and printed a set of templates and started cutting pieces.

All pieces assembled and did a dry fit using toothpicks and spacers.

Tron Recognizer pieces first painted black, then added color shifting paint.

I'll be cutting strips of poster board that are slightly thicker than the edge width of the foamboard. I was hoping to find red poster board but am not finding any in the stores, so I'll have to paint my own before applying it. My plan is to wrap the horizontal lines first, then overlap with the verticals.

Started pinstriping the Recognizer. Slow going but getting there.

This one's definitely on my bucket list, though I'll want to do mine lit from the inside, which complicates things.

Wow - this looks great! That red piping is so bright it looks like an LED strip!

Took a little break from this to do some workshop reorganizing. Cut more strips, got them painted and attached. Out of strips again -this thing takes a lot more than you would expect. Also did a repaint of the red color shift to make it less orange and did some touch up painting.

For something that seemed easy this Recognizer is proving challenging. Making sure it’s rigid without creating a lot of visible supports wasn’t something I’d thought about. Got some work in this weekend. Almost there.

She’s done, at least for now. The recognizer already had one good fall and a couple of pieces need to be reglued. But, it looks good in my office so I’m happy.
