TMNT Cosplay Build - 90s version

Anyone have any idea of the calf size of the original turtles? I know the guys in the suits weren't super big guys to begin with (ernie reyes, josh pais etc) so the suits themselves would have been "muscled" but not big and bulky like say the prop shop's suits are. Mine are sculpted around my skinny legs, and are about 20" around in the biggest part of the calf.. I'm trying to decide If I am on the right track because I have someone coming to help me mold them saturday.

So, haven't updated this in a while..

finished my sculpts of my arms and legs.

Started molding the arms... I won't bore you with photos of that process. I will just say, this stuff isn't easy and as a first time project, not something I'd recommend anyone to do with no experience. It's very expensive when it doesn't work right. I made 3 molds, and there was something wrong with all of them. The 3rd one destroyed one of my sculpts. I spent hours repairing both sculpts to attempt to make another mold.

I wound up patching the molds and trying to pour them anyway.. and this is the result. It's a bit rough, but for a first pull for a complete noob.. I am happy with it... trim up the edges, and fix a few spots, and paint.. and voila! Any tips on painting or fixing seam lines or small holes?

About to start molding my mask. It's not perfect, but I need it for Dragon Con so I can't wait any longer.

I'll perfect more on my next sculpt.

My question... am I going to have any issues with undercutting in the eye area?

Here's some pics.

That is a good sculpt. I would have put half of a ping pong ball for the eye. Just to make sure they are round. I think tis I going to turn out good.
Any weaknesses the sculpt has can be hidden when you paint it. Make sure to gloss the eyes.

The mold for the turtle head was a disaster. Something in the vaseline caused the plaster to soften, and all of my registration keys were lost. The mold itself is OK, but i chipped away part of his head trying to get it open.

When I put it back together there was some major gaps. I filled some of the holes with clay, and I filled the gaps with clay. I was concerned with the lost texture so I had the briliant idea of taking my monster makers texture stamp, pouring a little bit of latex into a tomato sauce lid and placing it face down into the latex. I let that dry, and voila.. reverse texture stamp. I went back and retextured the spots I filled in with clay. The mold has been drying now all day...

There were some thin spots after the first pour so I poured it again. There's a thick spot that isn't wanting to dry, so I placed a fan over the neckhole to accelerate the drying. Hopefully I can pull it out tomorrow. My costume is riding on this pull being good enough to use.

I also started molding my legs, and I've "finished" one.. I'm not sure my mold is thick enough though. It is reinforced with burlap. I thought maybe if it wasn't AS thick as the other molds I've made, it might be easier to get open. Also, this thing already weighs over 50lbs and I don't really want to make it any heavier.

Thoughts? Should this be thick enough to crack open? Is there anyting other than vaseline I can use as a seal on the plaster walls so the Ultra cal won't stick to itself, that won't weaken the strength?

Laslty, working on this cosplay as well. got all the pieces for the costume.. now just working on the mask.

It's a learning process for sure. I am getting ready to create the mold for my Syndrome mask and am a little nervous. I may use an alginate, but then I only need one of my masks whereas you probably want to make several. All I can tell you is don't give up! You're getting there!

I have my fingers crossed for you. I hope this pull turns out good.
I ran this video, and they use dishwashing soap as a release agent.

I have never tried it so I can not speak for this method.

Look who I pulled from a mold I thought was trashed today! My first leg mold seems to be successful too, I'm about to mold the other leg while I wait for this first leg to dry.
I'm worried if this thing is going to fit me.. lol.

Yep, there are some thin spots I've got to fix and some places that didn't turn out as great, but paint should hide most of it..

Also, just pulled this.. Some pretty thin spots in the heels. Gotta figure out how to reinforce those.

Wow! Looking great! Trim and paint and you'll be ready to kick some butt!

However... you might want to consider some sort of protection for the bottom because I'm not sure the latex will hold up with a lot of walking around. Maybe something like a reinforced sole? Depends on how thick it is...

Looking great though! You should be proud of your progress!

oh.. one other thing... your socks will be drenched...:)

The bottoms are pretty thick, I intentionally made them thick for that reason. I thought about coating the bottoms in plasti dip or something to give them some extra strength but other than that. I know one other guy who makes turtle suits and they don't put anything on the bottoms.

I don't think I will be able to wear socks. I'm going to have to go bare foot, there's no way I can get my foot in this thing wearing a sock. It took an act of congress to get them on with baby powder and bare feet.. getting them off was even worse.

7 days til Dragon Con. I only have the Pads left to make.. here's a BIG update.

Started to work on the muscle suit.. which was just a tight shirt and pair of yoga pants with foam spray glued on. I covered the foam in dance tights to give it a smooth finish. Then about 6 layers of latex later...
