Starting work on 3D modelling the map from Ahsoka

I found that out yesterday.
It's genuinely cool to see the Star Wars tradition of upcycling existing objects into props is still going strong. Hopefully a few folks here get thier hands on a couple before they all get bought up.

Some more brightened reference photos for anyone interested

Looking at the Megaminx model, and then looking at the screencaps (thank you!), I'll bet the actual prop is a layer of 3D-printed "plates" glued on top of the Megaminx. You can tell by looking at the edges; they seem a little more "rounded" than the raw Megaminx. The designer would then only have to engineer 3 different types of "plates" to layer on top, and they you wouldn't have to design a rotation mechanism. And they wouldn't have to carve into the Megaminx.

Now, if someone with some 3D modeling skills and access to a Megaminx is able to design the series of "plates" that get layered on top, we might have a simpler way to make this! And for those of us who don't mind having a static prop, we'd only have to size the plates for whatever diameter sphere we want to use, no Megaminx necessary!

There are diy kits for the puzzle. Just ordered one through AliExpress but this is the company website. Was wondering how to carve into it but if plates are made, that would make things so much easier.

Hmm, interesting. Not to be picky, but it doesn't look like the puzzle you linked to is the same configuration as the Ahsoka map ball. Notice the "central hub" piece in the prop is a small pentagon, but the one you've linked to is a large hexagon?

Figured I'd mention that, so as to prevent disappointment later.

Thank you, I just canceled my order. I’ll keep looking for the Traiphum version.

Yep that is what they did, you can see the ball underneath here. If it helps the ball is 8cm

Plates look to be about 3mm thick to me

This is really cool, I haven't seen Ahsoka yet, but I am a 3D modeler/sculptor.
I can see OP already has a great WIP, I can't wait to see how this comes along, I will be following this thread for sure.
My approach would probably be similar, I would try and get as many of the screen shots into a black/white PNG so I can 'stamp' them in with dragrec in Zbrush. Then break them up into individual subtools that can be printed separately over the Megaminx kit. This is such a cool prop, looking forward to the end result!

Thanks for the screenshots shadowfoil , they'll be really useful.
Way better than playing and pausing the episode constantly.

Astyanax , the model I'm working on could easily be altered into a series of plates, but the measurements of the segments might be a little off, since I eyeballed it.
Quick example:

ReplicaZero Stamping them in ZBrush is what I was planning on doing, as well as what I did on my previous Treasure Planer Map project.

There are still a few website in Europe, Spain especially that carry those around if you search on google. But that might only be good for European customers.

by the way, i'll open a thread tonight probably but Wonderknight and I are working on conversion kits and stuff :)
