The Fountain Guard, Lord of the RIngs: Return of the king (Completed) (Photo Heavy)

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Yeah I don't know much about those materials and the foam is working for me. I already have a plan for the raise detail on the chest and ill give it a shot first. If I do not like how it turns out, then I may try the other materials..

I understand, I like to stay with what I know I can do too.

It took me a long time and a good friend saying, 'here, just take it and try!' before I gave in and messed around with it. But I love it so much now I just had to at least suggest it. :D

I might try it one of these days on something a little more complex! But anyways its been a little while since I put a progress photo up.

Here is it all glued up and basking in the sunlight.

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

I personally could not see myself doing the feathers out of any other material, because it is not only just going to be a costume, but aslo a displace piece. As for the avoiding getting paint on the feathers, I have the remnant of the detail foam that is cut to the same shape as the wings. So I am going to place the foam over it as it is painted. My friend is going to do the painting so I have to wait until his schedule frees up. Spray paint was not an option for this because of all the detail in it and I did not want it to pool, because we are not good at spray painting...haha so it will be hand painted to capture all of the detail, as well as to have better control.

That's completely understandable. Some things just can't be replicated.

Sounds like a good idea with covering the feathers like that. Don't think I would have thought that far ahead to hang onto those bits. Just be careful I guess that the paint doesn't leak through the gap. It'll take a very steady hand to do the edges right next to them. Would not want to be your friend when it comes to that part.

Makes sense with the spray paint. It's all I've tried so far but I had issues with getting it to go into some recesses and detail areas. Hand painting sounds a good call and it's something I'm looking into for my next project as well.

Pictures continue to look great.

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Been a little while since I posted, had some other obligations.

So I went over my drawn on details in hot glue, I started with the wings

12038299_517135691796157_8092884846588637175_n.jpg12009740_517135681796158_8981011959508527890_n.jpg

I then moved onto the front nose and sides of the helmet, and it is not ready for sealing and then paint!

Paint should be done within the next few days, so stay tuned!

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Stuff happens, good to see more progress.
Looking great. Hadn't sunk through those would be raised details. Interesting way to achieve the effect.

Looking forward to seeing it with some paint on it.

What part is lined up next then?

Most likely the chest plate/ bracers or the robes

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Sounds good. I'll keep an eye out for that.

Always look forward to seeing a new update on this and I'm never disappointed. Keep up the great work.

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Stay tuned! Completed fabric portion coming soon! Not a lot of progress shots for this section though unfortunately.

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Top notch work! I was working at Weta in the armory when the originals of these were being made - it's so awesome to see the love for this design continues; they were some of my favorite pieces in the films.

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Sorry in advance all these photos came out sideways for some reason
And I do not have a lot of progress shots with the cloth portion :(

I ended up making a chinstrap for the helmet because it wasn't sitting how I had hoped it would.

Here is one of the few shots I have of the preparation for the robe

The finished cloak on my mannequin

and the finished cloth pieces on my mannequin along with the helm and newly finished facemask :)

Armor shots soon!

The cloak looks great. Was it a kind of fabric you use for the trim or did you do that by hand?

Think the sideways thing is something to do with the forum picking the longest dimension and setting that horizontal. Feel like I saw that somewhere recently but I can't remember if they had a fix for it.

For the cloak's trim I spent 5-6 hours looking through every trim I could find on amazon, eBay, and other fabric stores until i finally found the one I wanted/that looked the closest. I ended up finding it on amazon, and after a little tweaking I got it to look how it does now.

Re: Fountain Guard Build Lotr/Rotk (Photo Heavy)

Long post, have been trying to post this for the past month so hopefully it works this time, here I am making both the chest plate and the backplate of the armor
20151009_185221.jpg20151019_134529.jpg20151019_144638.jpg
I needed to make the tree for the front chest plate so that meant more sanding... haha a couple hours later I was able to draw the tree onto my foam
20151011_123159.jpg20151011_153036.jpg20151011_153044.jpg
I cut out the tree...very painstakingly haha, and started to work on the crown adornment, making sure to cut in all of the detail as close as possible
20151011_170305.jpg20151014_221109.jpg20151014_221200.jpg
I glued everything on and gave it some shape, and then test fit it with the rest of my costume, I then got to work on some more pieces for the chest plate
20151014_231015.jpg20151015_110655.jpg20151024_212829.jpg
I sanded it all up and glued it onto my chest and proceed to work on the shoulder armor, you can see the completed armor on this line, you can also see the gorget partially.
20151025_001602.jpg20151025_001609.jpg20151030_001103.jpg
Here I created the basic shapes for the shoulders...the templates I had to make took forever...haha but it was worth it in the end, I added on the details to the shoulders
20151029_222631.jpg20151029_233510.jpg20151030_001135.jpg
And now it just has to be sealed painted and attached, I also have to make the other 4 shoulder pieces. and then it is on to weapons!

That's looking great. Cutting that tree out must have taken forever. Result looks great though. Out of interest, what thickness of foam did you use for that?

I want to say that I used 1/4" thick foam that I bought in a roll from pep boys, for the tree.
