RANCOR Sculpt FINISHED PAGE 7!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Thanks people!

Yeah Al, I have two complete Rancors now. Started painting mine up - airbrushed acrylics and then moved on to oil paint. Watch this space...

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Little update...

I thought it might be fun to add a Luke Skywalker to this scene, so I spent all of £2.00 buying a figure off EBay. The face sculpt is really good.

I really like this pose so decided to replicate it. I cut into the figure to make it more human and less action figurey,

Looks like they've drafted him in to sort out Rancor's flu.

I'll see what it looks like once it's painted up (and complete with bone rather than cotton bud)

As you can sort of see, I've started painting the Rancor. I initially airbrushed with acrylics and then over it with oil paints. It is really difficult to settle on the right colour for it because the lighting in the film is so low-key. I got it to what I thought was a good stage, but then looking at it the whole paint job was far too orange. I mixed a dull green to conteract this and it is starting to look better.

I just hope that once the oils begin to cure they will not reactivate when I paint further layers on.

Not long until this is finished now, I'll post some proper pics then!

Thanks,
Chris

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

I guess if Rancor's have ears, they can have pesky ear wax. Nice of Luke to help out…

Beautiful, so far! Can't wait to see the final paint up and to get on the list to buy a casting!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Thanks Ahoudini! - I'm on about the 3rd or 4th repaint! - Very difficult getting the colour 'right' as all my references are all over the place colour-wise. I don't want to spend ages sculpting and then blow it all with a poor paint job. Feel like I'm getting there though. To be honest I'm not sure how quickly I will be able to offer casts as a lot depends on raising some money to get is cast. But, you will be right at the top of the list when I finally get round to it.

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

I cant wait to see your painted one. If you need money to get it started, Would a down payment help get the ball rolling for those after a cast ?

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Thanks Steven. It would help, but I think it could be risky if there ends up being any problems. Don't worry, I'll sort it as soon as I can!

Well, finished!

This has been one hell of a difficult thing to paint though. It first came out too orange, and then too grey, then I switched to oils, didn't like the result so soaked the whole model in dettol and cellulose thinners. Then, had a final go and it all clicked.

This is the first attempt. The face looks good, but as I said, a bit too orange

The second one lost too much tone/colour. I don't think it helped that this model was primed grey - kept the colours a bit too muddy

This is just meh. I needed more definition on the skin texture

So here is the final model! Started with no primer, straight into flesh tones with the airbrush, slowly worked up the browns. Then, I drybrushed the entire model with a much lighter colour, and then washed over the drybrushing to help it settle a bit. As I was afraid of ruining the model near the final stages I switched from using acrylics to using gouache paint (water-based poster paint). This meant that if I overdid anything I could reactivate the gouache with water and remove it without ruining the acrylic paint underneath.

Luke didn't turn out too bad - made him a new set of clothes so he looks dapper.

This lighting is quite harsh - it is a bit more subtle than this, but as you can see, it really brings out the detail. The eyes were done with silver paint with a gloss varnish. Teeth and finger/toenails were also varnished

The base was surprisingly effective. I mixed sand with white interior filler. The filler binds the sand perfectly, lightens it up to match the film, and prevents that fake glass you see when sand is mixed with PVA/white glue. Bones and stuff were made with sculpey and then washed over with brown.

I was debating whether to give the entire model a gloss varnish, but I usually find that it can very quickly make models look like toffee apples. In the end I mixed some brush-on gloss with a good amount of white spirit, and put it into a spray bottle. I then very carefully spritzed the model, being damn careful not to go overboard! I like the effect as it is subtle and hit and miss.

So, that's it! Hope you all like it and thanks for all of your continuing encouragement. I'm finally happy with how it has turned out. I'm still sourcing someone to make casts of this model, but as soon as I get something sorted I will post on here and also create an interest thread linked to this.

Yeah, but what happened to the Q-tip????

Amazing! Excellent work! Thanks, so much, for the how-to info, also! Can't wait for a casting!

Thanks everyone! Well, I've learned a lot from it, never really done a sculpture before. Not sure if I ever will again! Ha ha...
