R2D2 Lifesize Refurbishment

I made this R2 unit 12 years ago as a static prop. It's based on the R2 styrene plans available and is quiet screen accurate. Apart from the dome and a few resin parts it's all hand built. He gained dust after a few moves, but I have the space now so got him out of the moving box for a paint job.

Turned out quiet well.

I think a lot of people would want a super realistic remote controled R2...but to even have a nice static R2 would be really awesome. Looks quite nice.

Sweet ! Good to see you still hanging around
Yep....always lurking in the shadows....

It's very accurate as per the plans available based on detail from filming units I believe, size, scale, parts etc.....there are options to take the plans and build a fully functional styrene R2 unit, drivable, head spins, lights, etc.....or even make everything from aluminium, but I just wanted a static prop. I never intended to take it to conventions or charity events, just something for the lounge....so it worked out well.

It cost me about $300 in styrene included the vac dome and some of the parts that I didn't want to build so bought in resin. I did the math at the very beginning and with drive motors and dome moving parts servos, electronics, I calculated I could build a fully functional styrene R2 for about $2000.......if all ally, I estimated about $5k - $8 or more, depending on lots of variables. I've seen some build all ally and spend $10k

So for $300 all in it, turned out well.
