Picard S3 Phaser Type

Looks interesting...
Bored Paul Rudd GIF

I suppose if I took an Assault Phaser, Classic Phaser, and a Phase Pistol and combined them through a transporter accident it might look like that weapon. Did someone ask an AI to design this?

Where are the next iterations of the Dustbuster, Cobrahead, Boomerang, and Dolphin phasers?

I love it. Looks like something someone could pick up in some back alley shop at the fringes of the Federation. Or even cobble together from scrap parts.
Anyway, I've started to turn an old 1994 Playmates phaser into something hopefully looking somewhat close.
The phaser I bought off Ebay didn't have a working trigger or light. I soldered a new push button to the connections of the old trigger. That one needs more cosmetic work.
Luckily, Dave Blass posted some pictures of the design proposals on Twitter, so there was something to get a clear image at last.

So, here we go.
I didn't want to cut off the "Phaser 1" bit yet, as it holds the speaker in place, and I'm guessing I'll figure something out as I go along.
So, after having dealt with the emitter and the new trigger, I started with putting those greeblie boxes in place first.

Also, I replaced the light bulb with a 3 mm blue LED, sawed off the emitter part from the main body and glued it back in place about half an inch higher.

I've decided not to bother with making a screen accurate-ish new emitter, but instead to keep the original one, simply because I like it much better.

Next, the grip.
I didn't go for the square one of the original, as I thought it might not be the most comfortable in the hand.
I made a cover from white and black styrene, with thicknesses of 1.5 mm (white) and 1 mm (black). Additionally, I glued some magnets to the inside of the battery cover, to hold it better in place.

Part 2 coming after this break.

Aaand we're back!

So, I've the added a first bit of detail around the front:

So far, so good. Then I thought, I wanted the rear end of the phaser a bit beefier and with different vents. So, I dremelled out the rear and added some 1.5 mm styrene and glued new vents in place (1 mm black styrene with 1.5 mm white styrene spacers).

Next, I tweaked an stl file of the Assault Phaser front cover made originally by Thingiverse user Voxel3 and had it 3D-printed in black ABS.

After some sanding, priming and sanding again, I began to think about how to cover the vent holes. I decided to go with black PVC speaker covering...

...glued it into place with far too much CA glue, and this is where I'm currently at.

I wedged the cover on to the main body for a first look:

Loads to do, still. With the help of some Evergreen I-beam strips, I'll be tackling the sides below the cover next.

Cheers, all!

There is certainly a lot going on here and it seems the phaser would have been cobbled together with spare parts as you mentioned, due to a lack of availability, materials or tooling. Kudos for taking this on (it’s a sensitive subject ;)) It’s looking great, and the Playmates phaser makes a good test platform for the design.

Thanks! I'm having lots of fun with it. In universe, I'm imagining Jack Crusher doing something akin to Tuco custom-building his revolver in "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly". :)
