Joe Johnston Concept Speeder

This a small project I have been assembling in between others.

The speeder is a 3d file that I printed. The print came out good enough. Other than some repairs to some areas that failed and added a few extra panel lines, everything was fine.

I got some primer on it over the weekend, tied everything together well. I also started painting up the pilot too.

Thanks for looking!

Really nice! Great painting on the figure. Was this your file or one you purchased?

EDIT: Never mind. Just found it at CG Trader.

Thanks. It is not my file, I picked it up on Facebook, didn’t know it was on CGTrader, I am not sure what the rules are here about advertising so I probably won’t say for now.

I have been painting miniatures for 20+ years now. It is kind of my first passion, model building has come second over the years as my interest in it had grown. The pilot needs more work and I have probably put more effort into it than I should, but old habits die hard.

Here is an example of some other work I have done.

Redfinger,
As a figure painter, I can say truthfully that your painting skills are off the charts! Amazing work, I’m really impressed!
And Hunk, your skills are also way better than you think!

Daaaang. That's nice work!

Painting in general is my weakest skill, and figure painting even more so. I did this 2001: A Space Odyssey flight attendant for my Aries 1B build and it's about the top of my game. It would help if I got some better fine point brushes.View attachment 1679230

That actually looks great! The trick to miniature painting is the brush and the paints. Using paints that are formulated for miniatures helps. Also, as you pointed out, fine point brushes help, but you want them to have a long bristle length, this helps hold moisture in the brush keeping your paint smooth.

True! Red sable is the best, unfortunately very expensive, but the difference they make is amazing. Especially for painting faces, the sharp point of sable hair allows you to paint details way better than synthetic hair brushes and they hold moisture and paint better as well. I use Folk-Art, Windsor Newton and Liquitex for everything, and shade with Prismacolor pastels on larger figures, so when the brushes start to wear out they get used for pastels. Always thin your paint and build up the colors, it gives the paint time to level out and the brush strokes will disappear.

Sable brushes are a long term investment! My father (who was a graphic designer/painter) kept his for more than 20 years. Always keeping them clean (always cleaning them with a mild soap and warm water). As far as painting is concerned: yes, layers and more layers. Airbrushing is also a great way to achieve some effects...and lastly: scale! The bigger, the better. Your Aries-1B figure is very small Hunk a Junk; that why it's difficult to achieve the same type of details than a bigger scale. ;)

More progress on the concept speeder tonight. Got initial paint layers down and chipping with masking fluid. Took some experimenting, but the liquid latex got the job done for the look I was after.

Pilot is finished up as well.

Going to be busy the next few days so I will have more updates this weekend.

Work on the speeder has been a bit slow. I have been working some long shifts at the hospital so time has been limited. I am hoping this weekend to get some more airbrush/weathering work done.

Mostly I have done some refining on the chips with sponge work. I taped off one panel, my plan is to weather around the panel so it looks like the part was replaced.

So, here it is, I think I am done. I am not 100% sold on that clean panel, I may just give it a light oil wash, but I will sit on it a day or two before I decide.

Really wasn't trying to do anything other than make it look ILM style and just practice the techniques I have read about, and work in layers.
