Hellraiser Puzzle Box

To be honest: box looks awfull!!! It the price was < $50 it might be interesting, but no way I would pay $180 for this...

Have to say I agree, that box looks bad (and not in the good way :) ). I have a solid walnut box with stunning etched brass panels that has the same movement as that resin one and it cost me a lot less than $180 (also on eBay, though about 12 years ago now!). Good ones do still come up now and again, I'd hold out for one....

I'm currently working on that same design. Of course it won't be made of whatever that is made of, but instead, of mahogany. I was thinking of doing a separate WIP thread, but haven't done so yet. Here is version 1.0 - first attempt.

Sizes weren't cut correctly. Angles were off. It's taller than it is wide. Basically a bunch of goofs that could've been corrected had I known what I was doing :) Once I make some jigs and get the angles correct, I should be able to reproduce them without too much hassle.

Looks like a great first effort DarkPope! Kudos for that from a man with no woodworking skills whatsoever - let me loose with any type of saw and the only thing I'm likely to cut off is one of my own limbs.

Ooooh damn
beautiful.

I'm sure you guys have seen these before but I'm quite proud of mine.

Obviously a replica, not a stage prop but I included that last photo because of the bell jar display I made for mine. Also the Freddy Glove on top is just the Rubies costumes "cheaper" metal model and not the NECA one that just came out, tho I'm hoping to pick that one up eventually.

The Cube is from Hellraiser Puzzle Box Sales and Gallery. Lament Configuration Movable working puzzle boxes. Unique Versions of Philip LeMarchand Lament Configuration and the expensive model made from real wood and brass. The thing is beautifully done and tho it fell apart once, the guy let me ship it back and have it fixed and it looks immaculate again. I love having this on display in my house (tho it's locked away for now due to a silly reason I can't explain) because when people come over and see it, knowing what it is, they suddenly become fixated on it. I once had a friend over who was a fan of the movies and when he saw it he was scared of it. I offered to let him hold it and he backed away all shaking his head. :lol

All picking on him aside, i've NEVER attempted to "do the motions" from the films in fear I may ACTUALLY solve the box. lol. Also I don't like to handle it for fear of it falling apart again. I strongly recommend this thing to anyone, it's just so pretty. I wish someone would make a replica of the Leviathan configuration for me to purchase.

Silly question - couldn't the panels be made on a CNC mill or even laser cut? Just wondering why chemical etching seems to be the preferred method.

That's not a silly question at all. I can't give an absolute answer, but I can give some ideas.

First is that the metal is wildly thin - .005 inch. It doesn't take much to bend the pieces, and if they get a crease, or bent just enough out of flat, they will never be straight again - and the crease will always be seen. That's my guess as to why a mill would be out. It may be possible, as I'm not a CNC milling guy, that would be my guess.

I've worked with doing some etching and cutting on acrylic with lasers and my guess would be 2 things. The first is that the more common lasers are not capable of cutting metal. The ones that do are really expensive, and therefore cost prohibitive. If metal cutting with a laser is anything like cutting acrylic, the edges may need cleanup. Brass that thin doesn't clean up very well.

Since I do know photoetching, I can say that it produces clean edges as well as keeping the metal thin and unbent. The cost of startup and equipment for photoetching is very low in comparison to the other options. That usually makes the pieces cheaper on the buying end.

Hi guys, just got back into all thing Clive Barker and looking to buy a nice box (im in the UK). Options are Puzzle Box Shop, Puzzle Box Maker, Pyramid Galleries and hellraiserBox. Any thoughts as to which direction i should go?

I recently ordered the music box version from Pyramid Gallaries but the wait time is a few weeks so not here yet, I'll post pics when it arrives.

Thx. I was going for the look of something old, as apposed to a Box that looks brand new. It seemed appropriate considering when it was actually supposed to have been made..... all those years ago. And considering how many hands it would have passed through during its history. ;p

I have the plastic kit made by Screaming from many years back. But if I ever upgrade it is go with puzzle box maker.

Thanks man. I have been thinking about this and as a i need a new project to get my teeth into, I have decided to make my own, maybe some variations too. I see that Xane had the plate schematics for anyone to use but cannot locate them - can anyone help please?

The UK has no native box makers as far as I can tell, so its possible I could provide them for sale over here once I have perfected the process.
