Got a con this upcoming weekend and a local group decided to get together to make our own deadmau5 heads. Probably started later than we should have but so far we've come along way in 3 weeks. This is just of my personal one. Originally, we were all thinking of doing star wars themed ones, however, while one member is still making something along those lines, we decided to stray away from it as it looks like those Disney vinylmation figures!
I started on Feb 28th, so these are a few of the WIP images from the build. Need to finish it by this Wednesday!
This is loosely based off of this concept from a design contest. I really like it, but I didn't really care much for the extra details
Here's my initial concept:
Starting!
Ears!
Back switch plate
LED placement
Random pic of the back plate progress and the eye domes
Mock up. Note, the ears were coated in a thick layer of wood-glue which acts as a sealer and hardener since they are made from a semi-rigid pink insulation foam
Mounting the eyes, using styrene to make brackets and machine-screws
Plasti-dipped the head to help reduce "bleeding" by the lights into the head
Eyes!
Painted the slant, two coats of plasti-dip to reduce light bleeding out
Added the Velvet to the eyes...
(Yea, there's a slight wonk on the right one, but I don't mind it)
Started to cover the head. Lights work great
Goofy picture
Overall, the build is not difficult. Though starting at the end of February and getting to this point is nothing short of a miracle. I spent a good 4-5 hours yesterday just wrapping the velvet around the head. I do not wish that horrible burden upon anyone. I got through it with considerable colorful language and frustration induced- breaks. It's not perfect by any means, but came out better than it could have. I had to ultimately break it up into 3 sections; top half, front-lower jaw to half-way and then a 3rd section to cover the lower rear. Fortunately since I have this switch detail, it covers the nastiness that is underneath it!
Things to note:
I didn't include every WIP picture, so there's somethings that were done not shown here, such as the installation of the hard-hat. and other hard-ware placement.
What's left:
- Cover the ears with velvet
- Make a stand-in/temporary mouth. We purchased a sheet of perforated aluminum (just like some of the real Mau5 heads have) and hired a fabricator to form them, though, I cannot say yet if he will have it done in time for us, so I will be making a temporary mouth using 1/2" wire mesh and red stretch fabric
- Finish the giant switch detail; I need to sculpt the actual static switch, alone with the giant screw. The "GOOD" and "EVIL," I will be making a reverse stencil, apply it to a piece of clear thin plastic with the words in reverse, spray it black, remove the reversed stencils, so that when you look from the other side, the words are clear through with the black covering everything else, and so it's perfectly shiny on the outside. I will do that for both words, however, I will have a red-back light behind the "EVIL."
- Solder the wires and batteries. mount the red LEDs behind the "EVIL" sign.
So yea, I've got a lot to do still....
