Daft Punk Helmet for my little brother!

Sorry it's been a while, I kind of forgot to update.

So, I molded the ear pucks.

Using a LEGO mold box.

Sadly, I don't have any pics of the actual molding stage but I think you guys know how that works so we should be fine. The pucks were pulled in smoothcast 300.

Then, they had to be mounted onto the helmet. This proved to be more challenging than I thought, but a lot of JB weld and some unique placement of clamps finally made them hold on. I filled in the gap between the pucks and the Helmet with more bondo, then it was sanded flush. Voila!

Today I cut out and tinted the visor using spraytint. I got a really nice even, coating which I am quite proud of.

This was before the tint was applied.

Okay, let's paint this sucker.

Did some small work today, but work nonetheless!

I redid the mid seam today using a method from my Friend Pedro Aloha....Thanks man!

I totally could/should have used that for something I am working on right now. :facepalm Hope I remember it the next time I need it. Can you explain a little more of what the technique was? Did you use the styrene as a fence?

Yup, the styrene acts as a guide for the small saw. You press it against the styrene and slowly carve away a few times. In the end you get a perfectly straight line.

Well, wet sanded the helmet today to prepare it for the black base coat. A lot of people skip wet sanding, but I think it's fun!

Not really. But it is an important step, in my opinion. I pour dish soap in the water before I start the sanding. It helps make the piece smoother, and now it also smells lemony fresh!

Isn't is shiny?

In theory, I could have kept working on this for another month or two, but I have come to the realization that I have issues concerning perfection! All I keep seeing are the little mistakes while other people keep complimenting my work.......It's kind of a blessing and a curse, really.

Well, laying on the black tonight. Then after a three day wait, we wet sand again. Then, the silver paint. Then, we glue in the visor. Then. I install the foam, after I seal the inside.

So, like......10 days? that sounds right.

Two updates in one day? WHAT?

Black base coat on. Looking pretty good so far, except for A LOT of drips and A LOT of Orange peel. The Paint I used sucks, Contrary to the fact that it says "Premium" right on the bottle. I have used this series of paint before, and usually the paint comes out evenly and thin. In this case, it came out heavy and uneven.

Oh well, wet sanding will fix all that.

Sorry for the HORRIBLE photos, I just hate taking pictures of shiny black objects.

Rustoleum Premium all surface glossy black paint.

I'll be sticking with krylon from here on out for my main colour palette.

Well, I got some silver on it and test fitted the visor once again.

There are only two things that I don't like.

#1. The gap between the main helmet and the ear puck on the side of the helmet pictured is rough, as you can see. Not really bad but a little lumpy.

#2. The nose vents look a little wonky, but it's not too noticeable.


Overall, I give it a 8 out of ten. I'm going to repaint it tomorrow then wet sand to 2500 grit on Sunday. Then, on Monday I do everything else, which includes gluing in the visor and placing the foam padding.

Well, less than a week left! Part of me wants to sand all the paint off and fix the gap between the pucks and the helmet but I'm fighting the urge!!!! I have to finish this stupid thing!

This is a fantastic thread. Great updates and really strong looking build!

Been planning on a GM and TB helmet this year after i found Volpin's helmets on youtube. I know its ambitious but I dont think you can have one helmet with out the other yah know!

Can you tell me why your helmet is smaller than Volpin's or considered small. How do you determine the scale?
