***COMPLETED**** Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Hello fellow RPF'ers

Well, I haven't had much time as of late to work on this thing, but here's is where I am from my last post....

I dry fit and assembled the wings onto the fuselage to check the x-wing openings for accuracy and sturdiness

Started in on some of the details on the fuselage itself.

The torpedo bays looked pretty sad on the toy, so I cut out the entire panel, rebuilt and replaced.

As far as the wings go, before I start priming or painting, I wanted to add some depth to the battle damage. This has to be one my favorite parts....Slave over this project for months and then take a drill, dremel, etc and start hacking at it...lol. I found a 1/4" drill bit on low speed, held at an angle created some nice scars.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Nice! Thinking of doing this when i buy one.Any advice?

Not my build, but I'll chime in ;)I have one of these and adapting it, but no where even close to this level of excellence. IMO PC's build is the best one there is on the RPF, Miranda's build is excellent, but PC looks like he'll finish it soon.

Every time I look at this build I want to stop my build and go back and emulate what PC is doing!

Apart from the fuselage and some of the wings, the rest needs scratch building. I have cast the external engines and working on the internal engines, but I believe PC's build is the standard rebuild for this difficult (but promising) toy.:D

PC, you're doing fantastic work and inspiring us all...keep going Sir;)

Hey there Troydragons....just like Yaris said, be prepared to scratch build a lot ! I do think that most of the dimensions are fairly accurate which makes this such an enticing project for most. I mean, this monster is pretty huge when you get the wings opened.

The other issue is the cheap "waxy" plastic they use to mold these toys with. In my opinion, had I realized how bad it was going to be to work with, it may have been a deal breaker.

I've said it a few times, it'd possibly be easier to scratch build this and use the toy for reference and molds. Maybe vacuum form the fuselage.

And lastly, I would decide how it'll be displayed first. Because if you plan on hanging it from a ceiling, super fine detail and a completely lit up cockpit may not be the way to go. Conversely, if it's on a table top, you want to show off all your great work.

Thanks

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

I have done some scratch building on my Mattel Space 1999 Eagle toy with working aluminum gear my design and other structers on it as well to upgrade it, but I would like to do a mix of all the ones seen on the site that would be a lot more scratc building and a lot more time and money as well.Still thinkn on it.Maybe ill lust do it one section at a time . annd just throw my hat in the ring and start.

Ok, need some opinions here... should I rebuild the top strip, just alter existing, or leave it as is?

The pipework to the front and grid to the back look kind of nice... the rest of it looks a bit flat to me, though... I'd be tempted to rebuild that long middle section.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

what the heck. You've come this far, why not rebuilt this too.
Thanks for the feedback guys, I kind of already knew what I had to do... maybe I was looking for an easy way out, LOL

I don't mind the Droid strip compared to other areas.

Yeah, me either...I'm just going to alter it a bit to get it closer to the original. Without the original cast parts, I think that makes more sense than a complete rebuild.

Working on the hatch now. What bugs me is I'm looking at movie stills and there are no 45 degrees inside corners on the set but when they switch to the scenes with scale models, they magicaly appear.....lol

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Where did you get this curved piece from ill be needing 1 for mine when i make the engine for my mold 1.jpg?

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Actually you probably don't need it. I used the end of a PVC tailpiece from the plumbing section and trimmed it with styrene. I liked it because the size fit and it's tapered but it has no real basis of design other that what I thought it may look like. It ended up being too short anyway. I recommend experimenting with pipe and scraps to build the main engine to be molding the rest from. I've seen your metal work, so just transpose those talents to plastic, foam, etc.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Hello, it's been a while since my last post but I've been busy working on the cockpit.

Her are a few pic's of the progress.

Started replacing the canopy

20160523_205357.jpg 20160523_212001.jpg 20160523_212836.jpg

Then a little work on the interior. Instead of building a separate cockpit and inserting it, I'm build this from the inside out so I will still be able to put the 2 halves together.

20160531_181749.jpg 20160531_182256.jpg 20160531_184229.jpg 20160603_195915.jpg

20160605_135550.jpg

backing up the rear of the cockpit and assembling the floor. Had some textured paper I glued on and will paint black later.

20160605_140440.jpg 20160605_141003.jpg 20160605_141620.jpg

20160605_142801.jpg 20160605_143101.jpg

Ok, now to the seat. I believe SofaKing posted a good picture of the seat used in the studio...so I went with that. Balsa to start and covered with some fabric I had laying around. Paint it black later....

20160605_145320.jpg 20160605_151502.jpg

20160605_153035.jpg 20160605_154822_001.jpg 20160605_184650.jpg 20160605_190315.jpg

20160605_190931.jpg

I will use small metal rod to "trim" out the seat and then paint it so it's not so fluffy....

I'm WAY farther along now but just haven't had the time to post. Much more to come in the next few days as the family will be heading to the Poconos for a week of relaxation and fishing.

Thanks for looking.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Part 1 update today

Continuing to work on the cockpit.....

20160605_191057.jpg

Metal wire to trim out the seat, painted with standard black acrylic, then clear coated to give it a matte finish.

20160605_193552.jpg 20160605_193849.jpg 20160605_194153.jpg 20160608_194214.jpg

Using the existing interior of the fuselage and building inside to fit my pieces. Blocked off the back and worked towards the front. This way, I can add my greeblies, paint all my pieces outside and assemble it later.

20160608_200647.jpg 20160608_200831.jpg 20160608_201132.jpg 20160608_204026.jpg

Dry fit test....not bad....except it's still Biggs

20160608_212247.jpg

So I felt like switching gears a little and try transforming Biggs into Luke. Removed the head, helmet, and accessories to be either rebuilt or just repainted. Once I get the position determined for Luke in the cockpit, I will permanently fix him and cover all his "joints" to get a smoother more life-like figure.

20160611_151708.jpg 20160611_152521.jpg 20160611_153839.jpg

The helmet is getting a base coat of white and the chin strap painted up a bit. I believe I'll try to print my own decals rather than trying to paint the small details on the helmet.....but we'll see.

20160611_154119.jpg 20160611_154456.jpg 20160612_175517.jpg

Ok, back with part 2 in a few....

Thanks for looking!

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Part 2 update

Now on to the interior behind Luke.

Not completely screen accurate but I believe i kept with the styling. I had to shave out some of the backing to fit the seat in snug.

20160609_191203.jpg 20160612_190742.jpg 20160612_191141.jpg 20160612_192450.jpg

Adding various greeblies....some made and some extra parts of things

20160612_194714.jpg 20160612_200203.jpg 20160612_200910.jpg 20160612_202003.jpg

I get by with a little help from my friends...

20160612_221822.jpg 20160612_222236.jpg

Worked on building out the hydraulics...

20160613_192407.jpg 20160613_192848.jpg 20160613_195146.jpg 20160613_195525.jpg

Couldn't resist the roof too !

20160613_202801.jpg 20160613_210205.jpg 20160613_211653_001.jpg

and a quick test dry fit....

20160613_213551.jpg 20160613_213606.jpg

Once the cockpit is finish, I'll start running the fiber optics. Pretty excited about that because I've never done it before. Didn't know what would work best so I ordered 0.5mm, 0.75mm, and 1.0mm strands. I have plenty of LED's...just need some blinking LED's and I'll be good to go.

That's it for now....Can't wait to go on vacation ! Back soon !

Thanks for looking !
