Chang Concept Tri-Corder

The Head Canon goes like this...

Wah Ming Chang (August 2, 1917–December 22, 2003), American designer, sculptor, and artist, after sketching his original concept, went ahead and built a prototype Tri-Corder which he then presented to Star Trek.

This is that pre-TOS prototype which he fabricated.

Later, Chang was given suggestions which were incorporated into the two final props that he delivered to the show in the Summer of 1966.

Of course, the reality is that we built this CCT (Chang Concept Tri-Corder) ourselves in 2023. Our crew included 3D printer, finisher, and assembler, Richard Snowden (Snow Wolves Productions); Jeweler to the Stars, Bart Braun; 3D Modeler, Limey Builds; Machinist Mike Reader; and this Writer.

Minor liberties in design were taken beyond the original concept sketch, but it's nothing that Mr. Chang might not have used as he was performing his build...or so we imagined.

Construction is 3D-printed ABS resin and aluminum. Light (for a changeable screen display) and sound were added using readily-available OTS items which activate when the hood is raised.

For me, it's been a blast and a longtime dream come true.

Best. Mike.
