Blacksparrow Auctions - The Hunger Games - Auction Review

Hunger Games Lot# 18 Katniss Hunting Jacket sells for $60,000 with buyers premium

I wrote this early on in the auction:

Blacksparrow Auctions, “Hunger Games Costume Auction“, is going on as I type this and the prices for the Jennifer Lawrence as “Katniss Everdeen“, as well as other main character costumes are realizing astronomical prices.

Lot #9: Effie Trinket Reaping Costume from The Hunger Games:Start Price : 2,000.00. Sold for (6,250.00 + 1,250.00) x 1 = 7,500.00

Lot #13: Katniss Reaping Costume from The Hunger Games: Start Price : 2,000.00. Sold for (29,000.00 + 5,800.00) x 1 = 34,800.00

Lot #17: Katniss Hunting Costume from The Hunger Games: Start Price : 2,000.00. Sold for (4,250.00 + 850.00) x 1 = 5,100.00

Lot #18: Katniss Hunting Jacket from The Hunger Games: Start Price : 5,000.00. Sold for (50,000.00 + 10,000.00) x 1 = 60,000.00

Lot #68: Peeta Chariot Costume from The Hunger Games: Start Price : 2,000.00. Sold for (5,000.00 + 1,000.00) x 1 = 6,000.00

Lot #69: Katniss Chariot Costume from The Hunger Games: Start Price : 4,000.00. Sold for (27,500.00 + 5,500.00) x 1 = 33,000.00

I guess some of the people who complained on forums about the auction and start prices beforehand may feel a bit differently now :p.

I dont feel differently at all.

I never saw this coming at all on the JL stuff. Everything was about standard...maybe no the Peeta and guards but close.

Of course we were complaining about the start prices. I think its fair that if anyone knew that the stuff would go for this I would have stuck opening bid of the lowest amount and let it ride. If the opening Became $10,000 because it was bid pre auction fine. I just don't like it to be stated "this is for the fans" and have unreasonable opening bids. Thats all.

So yeah apart from the value of this stuff being unsustainable in my opinion this auction proves the old adage. You only need two people to have an auction.

I would be fascintated to see the transcripts and see that probably a handful of people bid the stuff over the $10k range and as they bought stuff or were knocked out they bid on the other pieces.

You have to admit the previous Blacksparrow auctions haven't generated this interest or bidding. Clearly Fong has hit the market right with timing, the brilliant convention appearances and...well timing. It was also a very well run event with great catalog.

My only other comment is when I left Sams club today nearly every magazine on the rack had a Hunger Games cover. I almost took a photo of that.....

But yes. Timing....as always is everything clearly.

From Scifi museums comment about ebay seller....

yes....there are also alot of people on ebay with PS4's making $100 over the odds. Hardly worth the time.

Opportunists rule.

I was not completely surprised by the prices. Perhaps by the magnitude especially, the one Katniss interview dress selling for $250,000. I actually felt the main character costume pieces would go for a lot of money. First, the Hunger Games movie was very well done, and you have the new movie coming out shortly which is getting strong reviews. Check on rottentomatoes.

As you quoted me above, I said some of the people may feel differently. I have no idea who thinks what specifically of course. Only they do. Whether or not someone is honest about their feelings after the fact is another matter.

Of course we were complaining about the start prices.

I disagree with you regarding the starting prices. The vast majority of them were as I said here before the auction in other posts, pretty low and "reasonable". Statistically, almost 90% of the auction items had starting bids of under $1000. I'm not even including the lots that started at $1000. There were 225 lots, and 221 of them could have been had for less than $1,000 each. Some lots had 3 and 4 costumes in their lot with starting bids of a few hundred dollars. I was contacted by a winner of the auction not long ago who "snagged" multiple costumes for a "few hundred bucks". So no, I don't see how the "we" you mention would complain at starting prices being too high. It makes no mathematical sense.

I just don't like it to be stated "this is for the fans" and have unreasonable opening bids.

It's your right to not like a statement. However, when you include that sentiment with the above comments, you are neither being accurate or fair.

I am not suggesting people are not entitled to post their views, because they are. However, people should check their facts and look at all sides when doing so.

Most collectors have become a little biased towards the main character pieces that I know. Thats why the market is right where it is now. These cheap pieces under $200 really aren't part of the equation for me. I guess those are for the "fans". We are constantly told by blogs and collectors who have great collections buy the best piece you can...and only have a few pieces. In most auctions you probably had that chance. In this one the odds were not ever in your favour with hindsight. If it had katniss you would need more than a propstore payment plan for that one.

Because I have no interest personally in the auction that colored my feelings towards it. I just...well...didnt see the prices coming especially with the market seemingly having been fairly repressed price wise. I guess I just don't move in these expensive circles where people discuss spending that kind of money. Actually people don't discuss much with me at all..lol. One of the reasons that I feel prop collecting is the way it is. We all want the same things...hero...main character...number 1. And cheap. Well..working with my budget definately. But at end of the day this wasn't for me on a load of levels.
Am I impressed with the outcome. Sure. Amazing stuff...and unlike other auction companies it was accurate descriptions and beautiful photos and energetically sold.

For those that did bid and win congrats. For those that lost (a fair few of you I see) I feel sorry but rest assured in two years you can scoop some pieces of it up on ebay for 1/2 the cost. Thats what people keep telling me about the "lost" auction anyway. Hype can be a nasty thing.

As for sides, fairness and being right....I just write from my heart...rarely my head. I also do it quickly. Its my opinion. Not sure what else to say.

It'll be a little different too in a few hours when I get over the $250,000 piece of red cloth.

Re: Blacksparrow The Hunger Games Auction totals $775,000!

I enjoyed the movie, but apparently some people REAALLLY enjoyed the movie. $300K? yowzers

The sad thing for me was, I couldn't even get through the first book and I thought the movie was rather lackluster and a little too Twilightish... but some of the costumes were pretty impressive. The one we snagged has become our second most expensive prop. :unsure

I guess I'm just surprised by the price because most items that sell that high are instantly recognizable to most people, even non collectors, and yet those items - the jacket, the dress, etc, are only recognizable to die hard fans. I watched the movie, enjoyed it, yet wouldn't be able to pick them out from a list of similar, commercial pieces.

Re: Blacksparrow The Hunger Games Auction totals $775,000!

If you don't mind, would you tell us what one you were able to snag?

I am only guessing and could be wrong, but since Art said, "The one we snagged has become our second most expensive prop":

Lot #194: Katniss Crowning Dress from The Hunger Games: Start Price : 2,000.00. Sold for (4,500.00 + 900.00) x 1 = 5,400.00.

or

Lot #225: Katniss Hunting Jacket from Catching Fire Poster from The Hunger Games: Start Price : 3,000.00. Sold for (21,000.00 + 4,200.00) x 1 = 25,200.00

Both cool pieces.

Re: Blacksparrow The Hunger Games Auction totals $775,000!

Notice I gave the prices a huge spread, because I have no idea which costume they got, lol :p.

It must be something cool :cool either way.
