HAL 9000 from 2001: a space odyssey

This is slightly OT from the purist "Let's reproduce the best HAL replica we can", but I think it would be an awesome project to build up a computer case mod that is faced just like hal, with the proper decals, lens and LED.

Here's my HAL panel.

hal8pj.jpg

It's a Lunar Models kit with some modifications. One of which being an improved grill and gel effect eye to disburse the LED light. I didn't build it myself, I ran into a guy on eBay who was making and selling his own HAL/SAL panels. I liked what he was doing and asked if he would do the same to my kit, and he did. It's great, although the HAL sticker doesn't seem to stick to well. I invited this same person to join the RPF, which he did, and had great plans for a sound chip with HAL quotes on it, parts, tips on finishing HAL panels, etc. But after a few months he dissapeared.

Perhaps someone who owns a Kenko lens can put a red LED behind it and take a photo.

I know of at least 2 people who own Kenko lenses.

That would put some of this topic to bed.

Mike, IMHO, the HAL effect has as much to do with the filming technique as it does with the distortions of the lense itself. I'm sure filters, etc. came into play to some degree. Tom W.'s got my lens right now, so you may want to see him for a pic.

For a repro, you'd be better off going down Gabe's road - and manufacturing something that will replicate the on-screen effect. Again, IMHO.

What do each of the squares represent? 1"? Or are they just to show proportions? I'm trying to figure out the size of the panel. I remember the "old HAL thread" (was that 2 years ago?) and the Kenko being mentioned. Too bad it's gone now. :unsure

:::EDIT:::

The "old" HAL thread was around 4/26/04. I found a bookmark I made on that day to the first page of the discussion. Of course the thread is long gone now. :(

I think the HAL panel was supposed to have the same dimensions as the monolith. The white squares indicate the dimensions of the monolith, and therefore show that the HAL panel is off?

Simon, That is a totaly sweet build up :thumbsup

You know what would be really cool? One of these build ups but with one of Hyperdyne's electronics kits. Motion sensors and sound board, like his C-3PO. And maybe wire it to a rooms light switch so that when you flip it on, you get "Good morning, Dave" and when you flip it off, you get "Dave... Dave, what are doing" and the daisy song, like at the final shut down. That would be freakin' sweet :love .

I remember tinking that this was the case, that it ws supposed to be the same dimensions from the front, but I've not actually been able to dig up the truth to it.... not in Filming the Future at least, or a few other articles. I know a really comprehensive write-up on 2001 is underway, and wonder if that will be addressed.

I actually have on of those kits that I bought at a con earlier this year. It's 'okay' at best, but the grill section sucks.

What. Who. When. Where. :eek

As to the "grid picture"

HALproportions.jpg

...that's just something I whipped up, to show the proportions of the HAL panel. The grid is in the proportion of 4:9.

The Monolith shown in "2001" does not have the 1:4:9 proportions that Arthur C. Clarke writes about in the sequel novels. It's something like 0.6:4:10.

I guess the proportions of just the upper black part of the HAL panel (not including the speaker grid) is similar to the Monolith proportion. Interesting coincidence.

For some reason I want to replace my garage door opener with one of these. I dunno why?

I wouldn't recommend it. Every day when you get home, it would be like

YOU: Open the garage door, HAL.

HAL: (silence)

YOU: HAL, do you read me?

HAL: (silence)

YOU: Hello HAL do you read me? HAL. HAL.

HAL: I read you. I'm sorry. This conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.

YOU: (fuming)... All right HAL. I'll go in through the second story window.

HAL: Without your stepladder Dave... you're going to find that rather difficult.

Nice replica, Simon.

Here's one I did a while back with a Kenko Fish-Eye. I scratch-built it with parts I had already, so some of the dimensions are off. But it does give you an idea of what the panel looks like using a Kenko.
