GREAT find.. Was this part of a clip of some sort? It would be awsome to see.

These pictures come from the fan made documentary "Returning to Jedi".

I actually played around with this idea when I did my recent Luke ROTJ cutaway but opted for the "traditional" half-shell instead. There's been a discussion about this reveal on Rebelscum which got me making plans for one of these too... I've pretty much got it worked out but I'm not sure when I'll get to it since I've got one or two other cutaways to finish at the moment.

Thanks for the pics. :)

I've been working on the specs for the last two hours. This is going to be fun to do. I think I just might take this on. So far it looks like the original prop only extends to a pre determined length. It doesn't look like it comes completely appart. If this is the case then this is going to look cool on a display case. I'll also build this so it is extendable and collapsable.

I'm going to talk to my shop tomorrow and see what this will take to machine. I'm basing the saber itself on a replica I have which is accurate to the hero prop.

That´s awesome :D ...

Would you be able to post some pics of the saber you´re using for reference?
It´d be a shame to have such a masterpiece done with the wrong specs ;)

I agree about the fact that it only partially extends.
BTW: the "clamps" on the emitter section remind me of the small keys on the Vader reveal helmet.
Anyone else seeing this?

Markus

Its a shame they made a prop with such cool inner workings and then didn't include the inner workings in Return of the Jedi.

Very cool idea for a replica.

So was this an original saber for the film or a replica some fan made ?? I am confused

Original prop, made for a scene that was to show Luke building the saber. The scene obviously didn't make the final cut, and not sure if they even got as far as filming it.

The saber looks great, it's a pity we didn't see it in the film.

I downloaded this documentary and I was surprised to see this in it, that's one prop I didn't even know existed. The coolest thing about it is how it pops open at the flick of a switch, if AS can't post a video of it I'll give it a shot.

Thats great, its funny I always thought in the scene where Vader takes Lukes saber and says 'Your skills are complete' that I heard some sort of clicking as vader held it, like there was some moveable part to lukes saber

ThermalShock-I'm glad to see such initiative :) I'd love to see what you've come up with so far.

I'm glad to see so much interest in this piece, and I hope that as people work on this prop, and make discoveries about its dimensions, components, etc. they share their info with the whole board so that we can really function as a community.

The R0tJ Luke hero saber has never been one of my favorites, but this prop is impressive as all get-out. Wow. A true work of art.

I found the clip on youtube. If you don't want to watch the whole thing (although it's only ~6 minutes, you might as well), wait for the vid to finish streaming, then drag the seek bar over to 5:35.
