New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Regardless of story matters, does anyone else feel like the budget might have taken a hit this season? The new opening titles and much of the FX are seriously lacking. (In comparison to the last few seasons, which have been marvelously cinematic.)

I thought the sets and FX in Cold War were kind of outstanding. The sets felt totally real and claustrophobic. The CGI was just about as good as anything the BBC puts out.

One thing I love about the new opening title is that it pays homage to the previous opening sequences in it. I see references to Hartnell, Pertwee, Davison, C. Baker, McCoy in there and the whole thing ends with the Tom Baker tunnel.

The rubber hand was kind of cheesy, but the sets and Ice Warrior armor were the best thing about the episode, imho. I think the CG has also been fine.

I really thing the rubber hands were supposed to be a nod the old "standard rubber monster" from the old series to which anyone under the age of 8 (and Liz Sladen) would be scared of but the rest of us just sort of enjoy.

Oh, and before anyone starts getting their knickers in a knot about my little poke at Liz there it comes from her and from Nick Courtney, Lord Rassilon Rest them both, in that he'd poke fun at her during conventions about how her reactions looked so real to the scary monsters because they were real and she'd admit laughingly to everyone that she really was that easily scared.

I haven't noticed a drop off in FX quality. If the titles are "cheap" looking I think that's intentional as the current ones are clearly nostalgic throwback ones (which I digging the heck out of). Making new titles with new music still costs more than using the same credits they've used since Matt came on and changing the second billing. It's also a BBC budget, so the FX is always going to be a touch lacking.

However, if they are throwing less money at the FX hopefully it's so they can save it for the anniversary episode.

I agree I think the look of the new titles was intended to be nostalgic. I've noticed some of the FX in the episodes appear to be designed to evoke a sense of Doctor Who's younger days. I think it's awesome and hope they stick with it.

Budgets for shows like this are per season. Sometimes you skimp a bit on the cost of sets for one episodes (like the rings) to pay for the effects or put into a later episode. Frankly, i loved the way rings came out because it gave a bit of a classic look to it IMO.

If you wanna see something on shoestring bugets, look at their doctor documentaries.

Still waiting for Tom Bakers which should be this month sometime.

That sonic screwdriver gets more ridiculous each episode. It should unscrew things, not track invisible creatures and remotely detonate missiles.

.

I would like to see something like the Doctor get all giddy because he actually gets to use it on a screw or maybe he needs to unscrew something and he forgets that's what his sonic is supposed to do.

I think he's used it for unscrewing screws at least once or twice in the new era.

I did get a kick out of the Stormageddon episode:

Craig: I just put him down, can you at least turn the noise off?
The Doctor: It's a SONIC screwdriver!

Occasionally it gets a little silly, but using the sonic to find the (secret base, hidden door, big bad, mine, computer password) whatever effectively moves the story on to the next point quickly. The other options are to either have some completely separate deus ex machina (like a character who knows the answer) or to go back to the days of 20 minutes of unnecessary padding to get the Doctor the right info, etc.

Which is pretty rough considering those were 20 minute episodes, yeah? :lol

Ok, so more like 10 :D Worst offender: The episode of Planet of Spiders, wherein Jon Pertwee chases after Bad Guy in a UNIT jeep, the whomobile, a gyrocopter, and a hovercraft, only to have the guy teleport away. That was 15 minutes of a 20 minute episode!

So, I don't mind using the sonic rather than waste time searching the sub from bow to stern.

Don't know that it's silly. If it can emit a sonic pulse, and then check the reflection of that pulse, it could be used for finding quite a lot of things.

As for those classic episodes, a lot of those could have been condensed easily. Not too many 6 parters for example needed six parts. The story would have flowed as well or better in 3-4 often.

Yep. Considering the kind of pace a modern iteration of Who demands, I think things would become even sillier without the Doctor's little sonic friend.

I don't want him saving the day with a kettle and a bit of old string. This isn't McGuyver.

Btw, am just imagining things or did we see a promo for this current series of Who showing Victorian Oswin greeting the Doctor with a "did you miss me?"

That's not from the Christmas special, right?

It was The Doctor greeting her.. may be from an episode we haven't seen yet but I know what you're talking about.

Also curious if this is the Future Sonic or just the 11th on "torch" setting?

He has to give River that Sonic at some point.

There's a little buzz going around about this picture of a young Clara Oswald showing two hearts on her jumper.

Might turn out to be a red herring, but with Moff, you really can't tell.

I'm not saying my quoted uses were silly, because I couldn't think of any silly examples. (I think the really silly uses are mainly in the spin-off media where the sonic has been used as everything from a tricorder to a dermal regenerator). My examples were to show how it can be used (within reason and not too often) to move the plot forwards.

I agree that many of those 6 parters could have been trimmed down to four. Maybe if the BBC had been brave enough to try half-hour shows?

And back to new series: Two hearts on little Clara? that's either a cute in-joke, or foreshadowing.

That'd be pretty clever if true. Nice subtle clue too. The only problem is the Doctor was practically there observing as she was conceived. Not sure how she could be a Time Lord.

True, and unlike River, she didn't even have the luxury (that we know of yet) of ever interacting with the TARDIS before.
