Great build dude.

Re: WIP Cyclops Costume for 3yr old - Foam Boots build w Video

Worked on some costuming projects yesterday as I try to make the best out of the weekend - since an Act of God killed our D*Con trip. :cry

Here is the fully painted X-men Belt.

Hard to tell in this picture, but I've used some brown paint to 'texture' or detail the belt.

Here's close up...

I also marked up my paper pep of the Cylcops visor, then cut it apart into foam-friendly templates.

That allowed me to cut and glue a foam version of the visor together. I did this mostly for my son's comfort. It conforms better to his head and is softer on his nose and ears.

This is still very rough. I've got to smooth out the seams (using some latex caulk), then I'll use some 2-part epoxy to coat the foam (which will give it a bit more 'firmness' and also provide me with a smooth surface to plasti-dip and then paint.

I plan to use a thin black elastic band that will run from ear-piece-to-ear-piece behind my son's head. Since he has nice thick dark hair, it should be completely unnoticeable.

As I've mentioned before, if you'd like to see a basic overview how I work in this material, I've posted two quick videos on my process...

PART ONE: MAKING TEMPLATES & CUTTING FOAM PIECES

PART TWO: GLUING PIECES TOGETHER (INCLUDING ANGLED CONNECTIONS)

Re: WIP Cyclops Costume for 3yr old - Belt Finished & Painted!

Sorry to hear your D*Con trip got cancelled. But glad to see you are making great progress on the Cyclopes costume.

Re: WIP Cyclops Costume for 3yr old - Belt Finished & Painted!

Wow! The Boots and Belt are killer! Loving these foam builds of yours. I actually went to a local arts and crafts store on sunday to take a look at their foam selection. All they had was 2mm sheets and smaller 6mm. Thanks for posting the Wandys info. I'll be placing an order. Great Work, Indie!

Oh, I was going to ask, where are you getting your Plasti Dip from? Is this something stocked at Home Depot/Lowes?

Those stores might stock the cans for actually 'dipping' pieces, but the only place I've found the spray cans locally (Knoxville, TN) is Ace Hardware. That probably means you'll need to really hunt around to find someone that carries it as most Ace Hardware stores are franchised and may not carry the exact same products. :unsure

Re: WIP Cyclops Costume for 3yr old - X-men Buckle Model

Since this work is what brought me to the forum, I thought it was only right I make my first post here.

Indiefilmgeek, this is truly amazing work. I'm sure I'll be fawning over your work more down the road but, as an X-Men fan, and a lover of the Jim Lee Cyclops, this blew me away.

See you all around the forums!

Faux pouches, X-men logo buckle, communicator logo, shoulder strap and the beginning of the cross-strap. You can tell from my hand in the picture how REALLY small this thing is! :lol

Here it is from the top. You can see the faux shoulder stap as well as the velcro fasteners for the buckle and the back strap (that makes it adjustable).

That's quite an honor and I thank you very much for the kind words! Welcome to the forum - we're glad to have ya! :):thumbsup

A bit more progress on the costume. My mother, Judy, sewed up a first take on the yellow shorts for the costume. They look pretty good - I think we'll nail it on her second take. I've got to pin some things and then mail them back to her (we live in TN - she lives in FL). :(

He really wanted to visor on, so I let him put it on... it's not finished and it doesn't even have the elastic on it to keep it positioned right (or more importantly, up against the sides of his head).

Also, here are the finished boot pictures - just to show how they came out...

I've plasti-dipped the other boot today, so I should have a matching pair of yellow hero boots by tomorrow evening! :cool

This is so awesome to watch come together! I'm sorry you weren't able to make it to Dragon*con! Hope you'll be able to come next year and bring little Cyclops to the X-Men shoot!

Re: WIP Cyclops Costume for 3yr old - Belt Finished & Painted!

Thanks for all the kind words and sorry for the lack of posting recently. I've been dragging my feet the last few days... just not sure where to begin on the last pieces of Mikey's Ironman suit. I've also been testing a few things for that build. I think I've finally broken through my "builder's block" and I hope to have some cool things to share soon on that thread.

But for now... Here is the update on Cyclops!

This week I went out to Dollar Store and picked up some RED items.

And after a bit of playing around, I marked out and cut a section of the larger light red bowl to be the lens of the Cyclops visor.

Fits very nicely! :):thumbsup

After this, I went ahead and used 2-part epoxy to smooth and harden the outside of the 3mm EVA foam visor before the plasti-dip coatings.

Here's how the piece looks after the epoxy has set up...

Now for some sad news... Tragedy struck as I was applying the third coat of plasti-dip as the visor feel off it's perch and I had to 'catch it' before it fell all the way to the concrete floor of my car port. This REALLY messed up the plasti-dip layer. :confused

I tried to straighten it out as much as possible (paint brushes were used in an attempt to smooth things out again), but it just couldn't remove all the new 'lumpiness' caused by the bumping, falling and 'catching'.

It's not terrible, but I'm really sad to have messed it up at all this late in the game. :unsure

Here is what it came out looking like after the plasti-dip and final yellow coat of paint was applied.

Tomorrow I'll glue in the lens and then paint a bit of 'detail' onto the basic yellow paint job.

IF I have time, I MIGHT wire up a couple LED's to provide a little 'glow', but that will be bells and whistles I can add if Mikey's suit gets done early. :love

That's it for tonight... Hope everyone has a GREAT weekend! :):thumbsup

Re: WIP Cyclops Costume for 3yr old - Visor Painted

Hey man i think it still looks great even if it did fall.

Also i wanted to say thanks for giving me the info about the foam you used. I bought some the other day from the recommended and she was very helpful.

Re: WIP Cyclops Costume for 3yr old - Visor Painted

Looking good. I hope your 3yr old can see outta that thing :p

Yep... double checked that today. He sat and watched TV with the visor on until I made him take it off. :):thumbsup
