Hi folks, I'm an iIndustrial designer and pretty much like 3D modeling as it is where I could turn things from idea to realisim (touch and feels). Taking further improvement for my modeling skills, I took this as a challenge and set myself an target for self motivation... sigh... (rather than just doing consumer's product design... hahaha):lol

Ok, first thing first. A big thanks everyone who contributing sharing info in the RPF. You guys are just awesome! I couldn't reach this step without you guys!:thumbsup

I pretty much like to work with Solidworks, good rounding corner/ material wall shelling/ creating detailing/ final assembly/ parts interference checking. It is a really good tool for designer. (of course there are still lot of silimar designer tools):cool

Well, as common I put this helemt into 3 piece part. For overall wall shelling thickness is 3mm, is kind of just fine for this size of helmet. I have individually added 2mm ribs height to the parts for reinforcement, means that the thicker structure area are actually 5~6mm and should be good to hold the part sturdy.

The back piece is using side hook to snap on the helmet piece, the center of both parts will be the stopper to to hold on each other preventing drop down or fall back.

Face plate is going to assemble with small strong magnets (~Diameter 6mm). 4 pcs on the face plate/ 4 pcs on helmet, So there is always easy to put it open/close.

Final, here comes with some CG rendering views. I hope that end up the physical helmet turn out with the stunning effect as this...

Nice work! What are you going to have it printed with? Post pictures when it's printed.

Re: Iron Man Mark VIII Helmet (Solidworks Build) - Pic Heavy!

That looks good! Wonder what it would cost to have one produced. It's hard to find an affordable iron man helmet here on the rpf. Usually $200 and above.

Awesome job!! Looks great!! I like how you added the functional braces and posts on the inside of the mask; it's thought out well.

Thanks, I think the cost is pretty much depending of the material cost, it some time include the percentage of the failure rate as well.:cry

Glad that you like it, that's the plus point for using cad system modeling.
Interlocking parts together.

Amazing work man!
Goes well with this

We waiting ahead year 2013!!!:thumbsup

Re: Iron Man Mark VIII Helmet (Solidworks Build) - Pic Heavy!

I'm currently also doing the same but with a different helmet design, CNCing the shape and then possibly vacuum forming the piece. Your solidworks skills are very impressive, I've tried making an iron man helmet on the program but have created nothing near as good as yours. Great Job!

Amazing Helmet! Would like to know if you would ever be sharing the file or selling it? Im interested either way :D

Re: Iron Man Mark VIII Helmet (Solidworks Build) - Pic Heavy!

What type of CNC are you planning to run it on. I Own a 3 axis flatbed with a 5' x. 8' cutting are but I'm assuming you would go withholding a 5 axis. If you can figure it out to cut it on a 3 axis I'll cut the first one for the cost of the material.

Re: Iron Man Mark VIII Helmet (Solidworks Build) - Pic Heavy!

Surprised this isn't getting more attention. Great modeling.

How do you plan to CNC this? You'd have to CNC both sides to get the structural parts done. I would be surprised if that were any cheaper than just getting it 3D printed.

mracole,

Thank you for appreciating my work, but I think there are always world top rated 3D modeler out there work 100% better than me:lol

General tips to getting complex surface modeling done is...
1 - you model all surfacing in Solidworks and knit them in to one solid model n save in a single part file.(as by the time you finish surfacing... what you got is a terrible long list on your modeling history trees...:cry

2 - import it in to assembly and making structure/ribs detailing, and the matching part as well... (and you will got another round of terrible history record again...:cry

Re: Iron Man Mark VIII Helmet (Solidworks Build) - Pic Heavy!

Make it out of titanium... then the rest of the suit...

About time we have a real Iron Man to kick some butt!!!

Twisted6,

thank you for the interest, let's don't put any selling related topic on here at the moment. I'm still a new member, need to follow strictly to the RPF rule:love

It would be handled by a professional prototyping maker all the time I deal with. Not really worried about the number of axis. :thumbsup

For past 8 years, I design and build numbers of working prototype for consumer product... with my contact I think that there are still a chance to compare the price with 3d printing...:love
