I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build- Aztec painting videos!!

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

I've purchased and installed the S.I.D. on my refit Enterprise and it works well. If my pesky housecats determination to knock everything unguarded to the ground be any indication.
Now as to it being "simple metal work"; I have to take issue with that statement. The S.I.D. has been precision made to fit inside the model darned near exactly the way it was advertised. About the only problem was- the starboard warp pylon support was slightly out of true- fixed easily enough with some sweat.

I've wondered about these. Is the support post a hollow pipe, or solid rod?
Does the shuttle bay fit & is there still room for wiring in the nacelles.
Did you light the kit?

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

metal work aside if i were to make these i would choose something other than metal, perhaps a type of CNC'd polymer composite, would not warp even with drilling and trenching to allow the lighting guts.

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

So... it's been a month since my last post here. Time to catch up! While making this post I'm actually watching STNG S01E06 "Where No One Has Gone Before" one of my all time favorite episodes! During work lately I've been recapping the entire STNG series before I start buying the new Blu-Rays. Currently I'm up to S05E03 "Ensign Ro" & will push through the rest this week.
This month has been a busy one. After my last Refit build I had the great idea to release the mask sets I made. Figured hey make a little side cash. Well... it turned into a job & a new business with more ships on the way! Then stack on top a bad tooth & a continuing root canal process that's still not over:(
Long story short I'VE BEEN SLAMMED!:D

On to the build!
I've made some headway on the nacelles. In this build you think "ahh I did one whats two" & then you have 8 halves of nacelles to light block, 4 to wire, 4 grills to paint, aack! I haven't even got to Aztec painting yet(good thing I have those HANDY Orbital Drydock Aztec Masks!). Which when I get to that point in the builds, I'm going to shoot some instruction videos for the mask sets. Enough of the plug! All of the wiring & some of the lighting is done. Just the grill & the strobe for now. I'll mount the fin/thrusters after the nacelles are sealed & the floods after the nacelles are mounted, for aiming purposes. Painted the grills, it's hard too see, but I added a slight red & blue color shift to the grape pearl.

More of the shuttle bay detail has been done. Wall decals applied & final touch-up done. Elevators have been painted. Next will be the landing strip lights, led sequencer, & guard rails.

I've started on the crew. These are l'arsenal's 1/350 3d resin figures. Man do they die & dismember easy! They give you 55 in the pack & it's a good thing. I've killed & maimed at least 10 already. I'm doing crew, officers, & engineers from WoK era, the ships will both be refit era. Before the rivet counters jump up, I know it's not cannon, but the uniforms are way cooler. I'll be doing about 20-25 per ship through out the shuttle bay, arboretum, & vip lounge.

Did some landscaping in the Vip lounge & arboretum. Still need to do some touch-up, water feature, decals, & maybe more shrubbery.

More work on the bodies. All of the windows have been filled & are being flush sanded. Most of the small body panels will come off, but will be re-added in .005 styrene before painting. I filled & re-drilled the side floods & added some extra body filler on the inside for a flood mount. Same was done for the floods on the E-hull top plate.

Mounted the torpedo launchers & lighting, & sealed up the necks

Both Upper Saucers now have all of the window, nav, & thruster lighting. Lower Saucers are almost done. Next will be mounting the bridge & sensor dome. Then the upper & lower floods, & bridge strobe.

That's about all for now. Don't let your builds make you CRAZY!

LoL, thanks, some days I hate me to. Trust me it's not all starships & sunshine. When your rent depends on a build, it can take a little of the fun out.

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build-UPDATES!

Well Im pretty sure no one would pay for one of my models so its only in my spare time that i get to play and a real job to pay that rent unfortunately, great work though and i have that kit in a box ready for me to get brave enough to have a go so this build is in my favourites as reference.

Orbital, you are beyond insane. Barking madness is a state to which you may not aspire. That said, your work is fantastic. This kit intimidates me a bit just sitting there in the shrink wrap.

Don't sell yourself short, there was a time I would have said the same thing. Refine your art, build as many cheap kits as possible for practice, most of all be patient with yourself.

Pull that kit out & dive in, remember it's only plastic! Shuttle bay is a great place to start, it's kind of a model in itself. It's an area that can be fully built-up on it's own where you can see finished results. Which can help give motivation to work through the rest of the ship. That is how I do it, these are my 2nd & 3rd refits & I'm starting to get formulaic with the refit builds always starting in the bay's

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build-UPDATES!

I am loving your progress! I will admit, when I saw those vents painted purple, I was like, "No-o-o-o-o-o-o!" Cause I read somewhere that the "light" actually comes from between the "beams". But then I saw it lit up, and you totally redeemed yourself! Awesome work. :)

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build-UPDATES!

What's really cool, is that when the original refit kit came out after TMP, it had these very shiny, purple and black, foil stickers to put on the nacelles to simulate the lit engines. The way you painted them here and the anodized look of your purple really reminded me of getting that kit when I was a kid and sitting on the floor in my room listening to the TMP record while I built the kit and fought with getting those stickers applied as perfectly as possible! You only had one shot at it because whatever adhesive they used on those damn stickers like super glue and you weren't going to peel them back up without tearing the stickers or pulling up some plastic lol!

Nice job!

Glad to be redeemed!

Thanks, that's what I was going for. Sort of a coated over metal look, the paint was a special blend using pearls & color shift pigments.

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build-UPDATES!

I guess I’ll blow the dust off this thread & post some updates.

Well it’s been a long couple of months in the shop. A lot of building & mask development has been taking place.

I’ll go ahead & make the official announcement first.
There will be a new 5 color “Master” mask set released. I’m putting the finishing touches on it now & should have it out pretty quickly. This set will have true Refit & “A” E-Hull plating masks, 3 color lightning bolt pylons, & a few other updates. It will be its own standalone product, not compatible with the current set. I’ll still carry both sets as the 5 color set is a bit intense & more for the intermediate-pro & fearless modeler.

On to the build…

So here we are months later, all wiring & lighting is installed. Shuttle bays, arbs. & vip lounges are done, & all but the lounges installed. E-hull & nacelles are sealed & ready for assembly. Saucers are 95% there & lower saucers are ready to attach. I’m getting really excited as painting is drawing nearer! They’ll both now be getting a 5 color paint up, one will be classic green markings & the other will be blue.
Enjoy the pics!

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build- Aztec painting videos!

Sooo.... this project was shelved for a bit & not posted about for quite a while. Needless to say the ships are almost done now & on to full aztec painting.
What I decided to do was film the whole process painting the 5 color aztec's.

Here's a link to the playlist & info on the series. Enjoy!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH9FSOD7RRY&list=PLKayFJq8VQ7rycn3HzPn1yKuyKx82at6i

While working on a client build I decided to film painting the 1/350 Refit from start to finish. All video is sped up 4x & there's a timecode to show the actual work time. I didn't film a few things like, cleaning my airbrush & some basic over spray masking, but otherwise it's been filmed, mistakes & all. Sorry the quality of this first video isn't the best, but Mrs.Claus got me a new camera for Christmas, so the rest of the videos will be 1080p!!

Videos 1-6 cover painting the saucer in full 5 color aztec. Video 7 was just uploaded today & starts on the E-Hull sides

One major thing, there is no audio!! This is raw footage of me working, not an instruction video. All you would hear in the background is Battlestar Galactica s1, or me talking to the Mrs. & the pets. Eventually these will all be broken down into instruction videos, but for now, pick out a good 35min playlist of your favorite songs & enjoy the video!

WOW!!! fantastic work cant wait to see this finished.

The Starship Enterprise is definitely one of the most difficult ship to paint, most of the StarTrek ships have very complex paintjobs, everything has to be nice and tidy and no room for mistakes that can be covered by weathering, when I build kits I try to be has neat as possible like the model is fresh from factory even though weathering will be applied, the cleaner the build the better the finish.

You have the patience of a saint lol. I have to aztek 2 of the smaller NX-01s and i'm dreading it and trying to find a way to fudge it.
