Old Tin Robot Toy Costume

Does any one else remember those old tin wind up toy robots ? Man they were great. Wouldn't it be great to go to a convention as on of these old Robot toys. I was thinking that there are so many of them you would have to take parts from all the old favorites so everyone would know what you were dressed as with out asking.

Thank you for the Idea. I'm hoping to get lots of ideas for something like this. I'd feel kind of funny using something that already existed in one of my builds. Even if I can pick up said item at the hardware store down the street, even if the original item used said item. I take a lot of pride in my pieces and it would just feel wrong to use something I didn't make.

Is that something that people here feel strongly about ? or am I just silly ?

I fully understand that if there is a deadline and It's just a job you get it done, but I really like to make my pieces from the ground up.

Excellent idea. I can't see how anyone could possibly be offended by it. I suggest leaving off the winder/key as it would probably get in the way.
 
Oh I like all these ideas very much. I'm working on a few things right now but as soon as I have the space I'm going to start. I'm happy there are people that like the Idea.

First - MAN your avatar is freaky!

Second - This is actually one of the greatest ideas ever! I mean, many people, myself included, had these toys since they were children, and making something thus inspired would be a breath of fresh air - they wouldn´t have to be REPLICAS, but instead, the inspiration is something that would make a lot of people happy - Talk about almost Amélie Poulain-inspired! -

Fred Barton is the only one authorized to make these robot props and costumes now. He does a great job, and probably made a career out of restoring them and keeping them preserved. He started with he was a teenager.

I do have a costume that was made for a TV series... found it on ebay, but it is not made of tin. It's the Big Guy from the Big Guy and Rusty series by Geoffrey Darrow.

And actually, the big guy is a suit of armor and the little guy Rusty is actually the Robot.

The Big Guy is in three sections. It was done in 1998 or 1999 for Sony. I have done a little restoring of the suit, but it does need a little more work. It's mostly made of a foam fabric over PVC . I'm looking to get a Rusty that is a puppet to go with the suit.

The same guy also had a very authentic Q-Bert costume from Sony's Playstation. It's three parts, the head/body and the two feet. I'm just a little too tall to wear it, unless I can find matching orange fur fabric to lengthen the legs long enough for me to wear it. Otherwise the velcro that keeps the legs to the body of the suit keeps pulling away from the body....It's really an amazing costume, and the seller couldn' t ship it in any normal size box, so for the price of getting the Big Guy delivered and an extra $40, it's now sitting in my storage unit.
