Lightsaber toys

Not exactly a prop question... But this is something that I've always wondered about.

Why are lightsaber toy hilts so big and cumbersome? They're supposed to be built for kids' hands, right? But they seem thicker than an actual lightsaber. Shouldn't kids' toys be scaled down and not bigger?

Just wondering why that is the case for most lightsaber toys... :unsure

^ The hilt also has to hold the electronics and the batteries. Some of the FX sabers are/were a little oversized for the same reason.

I remember smashing a glass lampshade to smithereens with a luke ROTJ telescopic saber when I was a kid. Just as well I'm doing hilt only prop replicas as an adult.
