Re: Dead Space "Black Marker" + various scratch-built ancillary props
update 6: ribbed for your pleasure :lol
the dead space universe is known for its emphasis on neo-gothic architecture. this basically translates to a lot of repeated vertical shapes, ribbing, offset right angles, lots of layering, and few curves.
here are a few example screenshots from the game, showing off the ribbed environments aboard the doomed mining ship Ishimura:
Now, my goal with this scene i'm crafting is to place the Black Marker within a proper context. I'm telling a story.
A Marker has been found on a remote mining colony. Recently unearthed during a cave-in, workers started noticing visions of dead loved ones, headaches, and homicidal hallucinations as a result of the Marker's alien energies. Soon enough, those energies spread, and deceased flesh was transformed and twisted into the ruthless living dead known as necromorphs. The outbreak was quick and brutal. Some survived long enough to warn others in their dying moments....
deliciously creepy! :devil
anyway, my job was to bring some of that classic environment design to my scene, so I designed a raised walkway that will look out at the massive Marker.
First off, i looked at the reference screenshots from the game, and then opened GIMP and slapped together a small template, emphasizing the angular appearance of Dead Space beams and girders:
from there, i printed it out and pasted it on a piece of throwaway plastic from a set of old blinds, then cut it out. It was mostly a mess, but i gained enough from seeing it and manipulating it to get a good idea of where I wanted to go.
Then it was off to the craft store, where I bought a load of styrene and got to work...
I wanted the walkway itself to be grated, but the store only sold normal "siding" solid styrene. I had to get to work with my exacto knife, and my fingers are still aching...
fortunately, I seem to have the scale right:
Moving on to the supports for the raised walkway, i hope i captured some of that Dead Space flavor:
At this point, i couldn't help taking some double-sided tape and doing a little mockup to see how it would look when it's all put together:
and it looks like the scale is pretty perfect
Thanks for reading, and here's a sneak peak of what's coming next:
