Does anyone much cleverer than myself recognise this 60's probably 70's tape deck, or even see any clues as to it's make or model ? Thanks

It looks like a customized build from a mini/portable reel to reel tape deck. There are similar ones out there, but without the joystick and the panels.

Looks very much like this one but the markings look like National-Panasonc

Wow thanks, that's certainly a point in the right direction :thumbsup It certainly looks like that one. The one used for the prop appears indeed to be a Panasonic, but the Panasonic RQ-156S has incorrect buttons :unsure

Some of the markings in the OP look retrofitted.

Wanna give us a clue what the original pic is taken from? TV? Movie?

It's the Cybernaut control unit from The New Avengers. I believe after checking it out that Teslabe is right, it's the Penncrest Capstan Drive recorder. The labels were probably altered.
