WIP Cersei Lannister: Purple Wedding - Game of Thrones.

Hiya! I'm currently in the process of making Cersei Lannister's 'Purple Wedding' costume from the TV Show Game of Thrones.

I haven't seen anyone else on this forum make this outfit, and I really wanted to write up my process :)
I am making this costume to wear to London Super Comic Con in February 2016, where I will be competing in the Costume Championship with my friend Helen Alice Cosplay wearing Margaery's wedding dress.

Here is the outfit! As you can see it has super intricate embroidery, complicated hairstyling which is way beyond my terrible abilities, and a weird cone shaped neckline.

And here are some close ups of the gorgeous embroidery from Michele Carragher's (the show's embroiderer) website

I have started off with the embroidery, as I have never done any before in my life, so it's a new endeavor for me that is going to take the longest haha!

I started by painting a rough design of what I would be doing on the organza, a trick I learned from Michele's site. In this pic I had also added the flower shaped beads (still amazed I found something so similar) and the gold and red rope/cord/trim stuff that's in the middle. I also sewed on a layer of gold felt, to build the stumpwork lion's head on top of.
12310603_876426922478430_7893372545456256586_n.jpg

I then started to build up the lion's face using different coloured embroidery thread. This shows my feeling perfectly

12345470_876794145775041_3080577225617861220_n.jpg

The 3D face! All I had to do to it now was put in some different tones to make the fur look better. I am SO proud of how 3 dimensional I got the face! (It looks better IRL) Also the tounge and teeth are a favourite with me :3

12348047_876971819090607_5063676516526519876_n.jpg

I then did that. And added the mane. I did this with gold bullion wire thread, then added a couple of strands of gold beads on top. I also added all the red crystal beads around the lion.

12342612_877789279008861_1178437680071410834_n.jpg

I then shaped some gold trim into a 3D crown shape, and sewed it on. I also spent 3 days sewing on 5 million tiny metal rings to the design and wanting to kill myself.

12391903_880808118706977_940567653519475936_n.jpg

Today while on a long train journey I made a start with the beading of the two lions to the side. I screwed up the left one, by going too far on the belly of the lion, buuut it shouldn't be too noticable and it's too late to change. The danger of beading without a reference in front of you at all times!

10638126_1110013905678206_2038326656_n.jpg

And that's as far as I've got so far with the embroidery! I have everything I need so it shouldn't take tooooo long. Will be working more on the two lions tomorrow. (I have a 3 hour train journey to look forward to!) I don't even want to think about the fact that I am going to have to make a second, identical but flipped applique for the other shoulder :') The things we do for competitons haha

The Corset

My partner in crime is a corset wizard, and we decided that the best way to give the dress the shape it needs, with the sticky-uppy collar, was to design a corset that was boned up to the top of the collar. I will then build up the dress over this. I let Helen do this part yesterday and today. (she did all the following in less than 8 hours work??? magic)
ChzUb.jpg
First she took my measurements and drew them onto her mannequin cover (and complained about how 'long' i am...) then drafted up a quick mock up of a pattern for the top. We then fiddled with it until it had the shape we wanted, before she made the corset from coutil.

I now have the added bonus of a lovely waist :3

In the end we used a strip of flat steel boning in the very front, 2 on each side at the back, and along the shoulder bits of the collar. The other 8 pieces of boning are spiral steel. We had seen a couple of ladies make this dress using boning before, but we feel that they used too much (i.e. a new strip of boning every 2 cm) and while the end dresses did look great, and the collar was held up, we felt the actual bodice was way too stiff and bulky. Too much boning makes it shapeless haha! Our priority was for me being able to move well (as I have to perform on stage in the costume + wear it all day), and to not use too much boning so it wouldn't be stiff, and would be very figure-hugging.

Aaaaand that's everything I have done so far! I have ordered my lace front wig, and have all the beads I need to do the embroidery. I ordered some second hand suede ankle boots from ebay (even though we never see Cersei's shoes while in this dress, the only reference shot I've ever seen shows some little red heeled boots) which I will be painting red. They have a lovely pattern embossed in them!

Over the christmas period I will be drafting and making the actual dress, and come january I will be sculpting and resin casting cersei's necklace! I'm starting to get really hyped to wear this costume haha!

HEAR ME ROAR!
haha! I've been making SO many lion puns while making this :p

Slept through most of today, BUT I did take the time to stain my suede boots! Cersei's shoes are literally only visible one time in this one BTS shot with a different outfit, but hey I'll take what I have...

Wow! That is an ambitious project; the embroidery alone is a monumental task. It sure is coming along beautifully though. Fantastic work!

thank you! Yeah the embroidery is going to be quite the task XD the show embroiderer said it took about 45 hours per shoulder, and ofc she's a professional so i'm in for a ride... it's going to be a fun christmas haha!

I'm in love. Seriously, I've ready every book and can't ever get enough of this.. :) <3

Thanks! :3 i'm just biding my time with stuff like this until TWOW comes out haha!

Heya! Since posting here last I have finished the costume! In the stress of it I forgot to post any updates XD so prepare for a big spam right now.

So the first thing I finished was the embroidery that was work in progress above ^^ And I also completed a flipped identical one for the other shoulder of the dress.

I'm not really going to post any in depth photos of the sewing of the actual dress, because a. i'm terrible b. I had to unpick the entire thing 3 times and it's still awful and c. noone should attempt to replicate any of my techniques involving a sewing machine. I have no idea what I'm doing. I like detail work :p

However you can see the fabric I used in this photo here. I also used a cheap af olivey gold brown fabric for the lining.

Around the same time I also did my first makeup test for Cersei, because my wig had arrived (pretty sure it was the lf244 from wig is fashion, but unfortunately it's been discontinued which is SUCH a shame because it is the PERFECT Cersei colour). First makeup test went well, but I definitely knew where I needed to improve.

So next I made the necklace!

You can see it in this photo here. It has lion heads on the sort of medallion pieces, and each is surrounded by these doughnut shaped circles haha

gameofthrones4x024.png

I'm lucky enough to know a blacksmith, so I decided to bronze cast the necklace! I don't think anyone has done this before for Cersei's necklace - i've only seen 3d printed and resin versions. So first we had a play with the sort of materials I had available that would successfully work with the rubber mould needed. I'm just going to copy and paste the paragraph about it I wrote when I did it :p

casting.jpg

I veeery roughly and badly sculpted a lion's head in about 5 mins. At the top is a compressed rubber mould of the piece, which you then shoot wax into to get your wax copy, which you can then make your plaster mould around for the actual bronze casting. On the left is the wax cast from the rubber mould, and the right is a wax cast from a flat silicone mould we made of the head too. As you can see, the compressed rubber give MUCH more detail. The only problem with it is that you have to make your master model from an INCREDIBLY strong material.
When experimenting with materials we cast a lump of scrap worbla, as we were interested in if it could be burned out of a mould (I.e. skipping the whole wax copy part of the process) and turns out it works really well! That there at the bottom is a solid bronze lump that is an exact copy of a lump of worbla haha. Horrible grainy texture and all.
I sculpted the actual necklace medallion out of wax, but it was nice to experiment a bit with different methods.
Here was the successfully bronze cast medallions:

and here iss the finished necklace! (with the finished costume. sneak peek :p )

Next I styled my wig. Lemme tell you - hair styling is NOT my forte. Makeup, I'm a wizard. Hair? Don't even ask me to put it in a bun. I royally suck. And Cersei's hair in this costume is bloody stupid. I mean look at it!!!
Game_Of_Thrones_S04E02_1080p_KissThemGoodbye_Net_1844.jpgGame_Of_Thrones_S04E02_1080p_KissThemGoodbye_Net_1832.jpg

So after struggling for a good few hours I messily managed to create something vaguely resembling her stupid death by rope braids hairstyle.
12718365_913874422067013_7203801255919695046_n.jpg
Of course this meant I had to do a new makeup test. Was extremely happy with this one. Ofc my makeup is a lot heavier than what she wears in the show, but I was going to be on stage and having photos taken so I need eyeliner :p luckily the look of disdain comes naturally to me so

12743884_914040755383713_6912335037718200953_n (1).jpg

aaaand that's pretty much it? I was still sewing on my embroidery 10 minutes before the prejudging for the convention competition. But hey, I got it done! A few days after the convention I did a studio shoot with the costume. Only have one full length photo at the moment, but i royally screwed up the bottom hem so let's pretend this costume exists from torso up, yes? Will post the finished pics in the next reply!
