WILCO MODELS stinks on ice

Ah, gentle reader, perhaps you thought this would be one of those threads with a "XXX sucks" title, and turn out to be ironic. Well, sadly this is not the case here.
I will outline a transaction that has been going on for 8 freakin' months now, and although I consider myself to be a very patient person. . . I'm done. :angry Until this gets resolved, I will consider the proprietor of Wilco Models to have stolen money from me.

It began on January 12th, 2007, when I ordered an X-Wing pilot helmet kit from Wilco Models. I decided to order the vac-formed kit, which I would complete myself. I'm no stranger to vac-form or resin modeling, so didn't anticipate any problems. I paid the sum of $90.00 via Paypal.
So I waited.
The following are paraphrased emails to and from Wilco Models.
Some of my sent email dates are approximate, as some of the earliest ones have disappeared. I do however, have all of Wilco's emails to me saved.

The first message I received from Wilco was on Feb 13, 2007, in which he explained that he had been waiting for a shipment of styrene to arrive, and he should be manufacturing my kit "that weekend."

Feb 21, 2007 I received another message from Wilco saying that he had gotten the kit made, but "laid open his thumb" in the workshop and was unable to trim and pack it for shipment.

Sometime between then and his next message, I asked him for an update.

March 6, 2007 I heard back. He said it "should be in the mail by Friday."

Requested another update after that "Friday" had come and gone.

March 19, 2007. He said he was "packing it today and shipping in the morning."

I did receive the kit sometime around the end of March. To begin with, it was incomplete. It was advertised to contain all parts necessary to build it up, including decals and the black edge trim around the bottom. The edge trim was nowhere in the box.
Furthermore, the 2 main outer shells were cracked! This was not an area that would be hidden once the helmet was complete. There were cracks in the "cheek" areas. Kind of where the lowered visor would rest against the cheeks.
I emailed Wilco and told him about the damage and missing pieces and asked about the possibility of a refund. He said he didn't give refunds but he offered me 2 options: to return it so he could replace the missing/damaged pieces, or, to return it and he would do the kit as a "build up" for my trouble. I agreed to have him build up the kit for me, and sent it back to him (at my own expense.)

I heard nothing for a while. I finally emailed him sometime around the middle of April to see if he got the package back.

April 22, 2007. He emailed me and said he had received it (thanks for letting me know!) and "hoped to have it finished by the end of the week."

May 16, 2007. I emailed him back saying it had been 3 weeks or so, and could I get an update.

June 11, 2007. Never got my update. . . after nearly a month. . .so I emailed him again asking what was up.

June 12, 2007. He emailed me saying it would be mailed out by "Saturday morning." (June 16th) He had an upcoming Air Force TDY and would be mailing out all his backorders before his trip.

June 16, 2007. He emailed me again, saying he didn't have a chance to get the helmet out before his trip. For the delays, he offered to include a chest box and wrist computer when he sent it to me.

July 30, 2007. After hearing NOTHING AT ALL for over a month I emailed him again asking for. . . drumroll please. . . an update!!!

July 31, 2007. He replied, saying he was back home, and would ship my helmet "by Thursday." (August 2nd.)

August 15, 2007. I emailed him again and told him I wanted my helmet or my $$$ back.

Up until today, I had been polite and merely wanted some communication regarding the status of my order. Today's email was, by my standards, kinda rude. Like I said, I'm patient. . . but he's had my $90.00 for 8 months now, and I have nothing.

Regardless of how this turns out, I don't see myself dealing with Wilco Models in the future.

What does this thread do? Well, probably nothing much when all is said and done. It's just kind of cathartic to get it all down in words.

*sigh*

Wow, sorry to hear about this. I've only had one transaction with Wilco and that went very well. I'm hoping this is an abberation and it can be resolved. But that does seem like an extraordinarily long time.

I've heard of rebel helmet problems before but the ones I know of were resolved. Were you talking to Bill?

I've bought from them once online and thought the process stank. Though I did get my stuff after a couple reminders that I was still waiting.

They do every local convention, but only resin goods. No vac-form stuff.

Sorry to hear it, you shouldn't have to wait that long simply just to get what you paid for. Hope you can get it resolved.

Have you talked to WAKAL?

Wilco is doing the business for him, as long as he´s stationed in turkey (which I believe he still is!?).

I had similar problems with Bill not answering my mails and massive delays in getting my stuff. Alex kicked Bills arse and all went fine ;)

Good luck, Markus

8 months?

Pssshhhwww........

Ive been waiting nearly 2 years for some resin lightsabers...... i sent him a couple hundred dollars worth of carbon fiber blades and was promised to have several remounted, do this day i have only received 2 back.....

honestly, I have just written it off as a loss..... a HUGE major loss, but i dont even bother emailing him any more.....

I DO understand he is active military, but still gives ya no one any reason to shat on a customer

It's just become more of a source of frustration than anything else. I'm active military as well, so I know that there can be lots of crazy stuff that comes up. . . but 8 months is pretty excessive. Especially seeing how he's had it back in his hands since the middle of April or so.

Markus,
I have talked to Wakal. He's been very helpful and I think he has contacted Bill at least a couple of times on my behalf. But I'm still waiting for my helmet. :unsure

I can't believe he had you send the parts back at your expense. If parts were broken and missing, he should have footed the bill.

But that's just one part of a greater problem.:unsure

my wilco helmet took about that long to get too. this mostly read as though i had written it myself. i did get it all sorted out in the end, but i feel your pain.

I had similar problems getting some resin DL-44s from him this spring. I ordered them in Decemeber and I got them in time for CIV; which was my absolute deadline. But that's a large amount of time for 2 resin buildups. Most of my waylaying was due to Bill injuring his thumb and his military duty. The ANH Hero arrived with a broken scope mount. I sent it back at my own expense as well for a replacement.

The finished products are awesome and I am happy to have them. Alas, the time it took was very annoying.

I ordered a X-Wing helmet and Mal pistol in Jan, and got the helmet in March, and the pistol about a month later.

Sure, that is a long time, and it is a little annoying. But the products I got were nice, and Bill kept good communication (so it was never like he dropped off the face of the earth)

I got my stuff in time, so really, I don't have a problem with them. Sorry to hear you had a bad experence.

Two things. First, what's this crap about "no refunds"? Hey, Pal, you screwed up, not me!!! If you can't get my product to me in YOUR designated time frame, give me back my hard earned cash!
Second, I too have had a problem with them! I sent him a boxfull of models as we were working on a trade. After a year and he never sent me my stuff, I was pissed! Alex, did get on to them and it took another 6 months before I recieved anything. When I finally recieved something, it was a bunch of stuff that I didn't want...nothing that we had agreed on. It seemed as if he had forgotten what he had promised me (sure, it was a YEAR AND A HALF AGO!) and just sent me stuff he just had laying around, many of which were incomplete kits and resin pieces that were 'weeping', completely useless. So yeah, I got screwed. I let it go at that feeling that pursuing this would be pointless. Now I just tell my story whenever the name Wilco "models" comes up. :angry

Back in fall of 2004, I had ordered a RFT helmet kit from Alex. He told me that he had actually not made that helmet before, but thought he could. After a couple of months he got back to me that he had troubles with sculpting it and that he was unable to meet the deadline. I got a full refund the same day.
He promised to also send me a resin-cast M19 scope for free, something that I had said I wanted but not paid for. I got two.

So, my impression is that Alex is the reliable, stand-up guy, and that it is mostly his associates who are unreliable. All through this time, communication was good.

I got a pulse rifle, flame unit, and resin gerber from Alex a long while ago and was very happy with the transaction all around, but I was dealing directly with Alex, I didn't even know they were called "wilco models" until I got the box with the sticker on it that said that.

I thought the resin work was excellent, but the vac formed pieces were poor. Mind you, this was my first real dance with vacformed materials and I made some mistakes in handling it, and cracked one of the shrouds, so I plan to order a set from Matt when I can afford it.

I don't think I ever dealt with Bill, and my transaction with Alex was long before he was put on active duty. Though he was off in Texas at a pistol competition of some kind, and I still got my items in a timely manner.

Hmmm. . . I didn't intend for this to become a dogpile thread, I was mainly venting my frustrations. But it seems some others have had some problems here and there with Wilco.

And I still haven't had any response from him.

I wasn't dogpiling myself. I love the stuff I got from Bill. The casts are amazing. The paint work is top notch. I love carrying those resin blasters at events.

It just took a while to get them from him. Everything was explained and was a good excuse for the delays and he always got back to me right away. The shipping problem wasn't his fault. The blasters were packed well. Just mishandled I guess.

The delay was my only concern. I just like to give perspective buyers a chance to hear everything.

I read this when I got up and give it much thought all day, I swore I would not jump into this but I think I might. Bill and I are good friends and have been for a few years. He dose not do all the casting and builds by himself, he has a partner as many do. I will not name him, but he and I are really good friends, we speak 3 to 4 times a week. Over the past year or so, he has had some really bad health problems with his heart and bloodpressure. He is just now starting to get things in better shape. He has had me worried pretty much over the past 8 to 9 months. He is the one that dose most of the work, so when he is ill as he has been things run behind. Am not taking sides, just telling you all what I know for fact. They are both very good guys, and do put out very nice props. Bill and his wife are trying to get moved into thier new house as well.

Just please keep all this in mind....Kev :angel

Mustang,
Oh I can appreciate that the road of life is full of potholes. I'm a career military guy myself. I understand that things can come up to delay projects. . . but when someone takes money they have an obligation to complete a transaction by providing goods or a service. If they can't provide, they should give back the money. Not let things drag out indefinitely.
If the person or persons "get behind" as you say, then they should STOP TAKING NEW ORDERS. Seems pretty simple.

I just paid for a blaster kit before I saw this thread. Bill said that he is 'back in the saddle' now and can take orders. 1-2 week turnaround.
