I remember seeing lots of pics of a black/silver Sidious saber (used against Yoda) at an exhibit shortly after EPIII came out. It was sitting vertically inside a plastic clear tube... anybody have some good pics of this???

Maybe, it had come to Japan at the Starwars exhibition in 2005.
I memorize to be attached Covertec button.
I am sure to have a picture postcard.I look for it.
I think that the up-loading of the image becomes a weekend.

Was there ever actually a V2 Sidious or was that just the stunt prop?
I never really understood the Sidious saber situation, especially since he fights Mace and the jedi posse with the Anakin stunt saber and a red blade. Meaning this one is the only actually appearing onscreen Sidious saber. While the visual dictionary and MR show us something more stylized.
I assumed the "He had a spare sitting around the office" theory to be a fan creation.

As far as the different versions go - I just attribute it to bad editing... the scene of Palpatine using Anakin's saber originally had Anakin present for the fight, so I assume it was some kind of situation where Palpatine snatched his saber to fight the others. I have seen cuts of these scene also where instead of out the window, Anakin's saber is knocked from Palpatine's hands in towards his office. That would make him having this "version 2" not to so strange later...

I think it's just a stunt prop. The hero has that metallic prismatic finish and the stunt has the closest paint color they could get, a metallic dark brown.
The saber mixup onscreen is due to editing. The fight was changed. He originally fought Mace with Anakin's saber, but then Lucas decided Anakin would run in during the fight.
The Palpatine saber is seen quite clearly onscreen when it pops out of his sleeve and the Yoda fight.

Either way I like the Black metallic V2 one better. It has more of that Sith-ish quality to it than the shiny chrome with gold plated accents one that everyone has seen.
However, I guess if the ruling figurehead of a galaxy were to have a weapon then it does make sense that it would be an expensive, elaborate, hancrafted piece of art as well as a sidearm.

It's actually a dark bronze metallic, not black.
