Is it necessary for the pommel and the lower end of the body to be separate?

No, not really. I originally designed them as a single piece. The reason I separated them is for convenient painting. I can't mask them off in a way that would be satisfying to me, so it will be easier to paint them as separate pieces. The area where the paint differs is a tiny bevel that I can't properly mask with tape.
