Hey everyone. Im new to all this and im pepping and glassing a whole mark 7. So far the helmet has been the most difficult part through the bondo stage. Just curious what other people thought was the most difficult so if I know the worst is behind me lol. Thanks

I would have to say the helm was the hardest to pep for me. It also was the first piece I had ever pep'ed before too, and i did have to make 3 of them lol. By the third one though it was cake =) So far the bondo all seems to be the same, just very time consuming. The part that was the easiest and the most fun (for some reason) was the shins. I dont know why, I just really liked peping them.

Good Luck on your build!!

I don't do the fiberglass way anymore, but the hardest part was doing the back piece(mark 7)

Other than that foam is really easy

the thighs are kickin my A$$!

I'm building a mark VI suit and have hit a wall with these thigh pieces :angry

The back is next and looks epic hard, did you use the same scale as the chest piece to make sure it all lined up? Thats the only way for them to line up right im thinkin.

I have to say and others will agree that the shins are a real PITA to do. Its difficult to get the pieces together and make them look right.

Yes the back and chest need to be scale the same that way they join together symmetrically

I found if you build each piece in sections rather then a whole it fits together better. I used to start at one point then work my way around until it was finished, but I found that way can disfigure the piece. One mistake will get amplified as you keep going. For example on the back I made the shoulder parts first then set them aside. Then I made the left side set it aside. Made the right side, then the middle. After each piece was build separately I would then glue them all together. This really worked for me so I just thought I would share.

Have fun!!

the area right above the knee is what's giving me problems. Just can't get it to look right! I'm not looking forward to moving onto the other thigh!

I took a break from it built another helmet...that's how bad it's been!

you mean pep them in sections right? To be clear you would still resin it all together as one piece? Btw your build is coming out awesome cant wait to see more pics.

I've spent ages on a mk V helmet starting with pep, then using DAS clay rather than bondo. I finally cast in plastic last night. Wasn't hard to produce the helmet although it was time consuming. Clay is much easier to sand than filler. The problem I have is at the molding phase, my parts seem to warp when they come out. Think I'm making my silicone molds too thin. :(
Still, a little work with a hair dryer and I should be good to go. :)

Yeah pep them in sections, you resin them all together. Thanks, I have made a lot progress on my build. I was just waiting till I had a bit more done before posting some pics.

im new to the whole pepping scene so i jut started on my mark 3 helmet on friday my very first build i find the eye area hard cause so many bends and numbers on the stock are interwoven with each other so hard to tell whats what and what goes where so i said bah nvm lol and cut out certain parts and kind of modded it a bit to get a certain look. then hopefully when i bondo it up and start sanding i can get the right look i want. pleas eif anyone have any tips for a new pepper like me pls send them my way im addicted and cant stop lol

The helmet is the most recongized part of the suit. We, as humans, are very perceptive when it comes to facial recognition. We can easily detect subtle deviations in shape and symmetry. I think that's why it's so hard to get a helmet you're happy with. The curves on the faceplate, the centerline and jaw, the rounding of the back, all have to come together in a 3-d space that is MUCH easier to do when you're just rendering it with CGI on a 2D movie screen. Well, not that what those artists do is "easy", but hopefully you get my point.

The shins, feet, thighs, etc. can all be "pretty close", and nobody outside this community will ever look at those pieces and say "why is your shin shaped so funny?".

Everybody will want to try on the helmet.
