What is everyone using to add sounds to props these days

Ive got a project im working on that needs sounds. I have found a number of sound recorders on the net but im not sure what is good and what is not.

Is there a sound card that someone can suggest that can hold half a dozen sounds and can play each sound via a individual switch?
