Visiting Harry Potter filming locations

Has anyone been to any of the filming locations for Harry Potter? I'm going to England in February for a couple of weeks and I want to check some places out. What's worth going to and what should I not bother with? Previously, I've been to Lacock Abbey (by accident, didn't know before going there that they'd even filmed there) where they shot some of the Hogwarts courtyard scenes for the first two films.

I'm definitely bringing my Slytherin uniform with me to take photos. My husband is going to be so embarrassed....:lol

Alnwick Castle in Northumberland is quite near me - a lot of stuff in the first couple of films was shot there.

A few years ago they were big on the HP theme, with a Hagrid and a Dumbledore walking around, lifesize cutouts of other characters and things like that.

I haven't been for a good long while, but it might be worth checking out:

I live in Gloucestershire and they did Some filming at Gloucester Cathedral if I remember correctly :) have been there a few times.

I also went to boarding school at 6th form (where you do a-levels... The final bit of school before going to university) and we used to go to the school where they did quite a bit of filming of the great Hall scenes for our Hockey matches! :D

I'll be damned if I can remember which school it was though... Lol. They're all pretty imposing and amazing looking. Not that you would get onto any of the school campuses as they're private land.

Anyway, back on topic.

Gloucester cathedral is a great and they used to do a 'Harry Potter tour' there too :)

Where abouts in England are you going though? These places are all quite far apart :)

I live down the road from where they film all the forest scenes (and a lot of other movies too) but they are just woods, beautiful as they are. Look on a website called London taxi tours. They have just about every location of filming listed on their site. They do tours too.

Thanks everyone!

I'll be staying in Cambridge mostly but I'll have a car on weekends so I can drive wherever I need to go.

Hooooly cow I just checked out the London Taxi Tour website. That's crazy kind of expensive. I think I'll do my own tour. lol

The train bridge near Hogwarts where the Dementors make their first appearance is in Glenfinnan, Scotland. I took this picture there on my honeymoon, YEARS before the Harry Potter films came out, lol.

God, I loved Scotland.....:love

Hogwarts itself is shown to be on the banks of Lock Shiel, also located in Glenfinnan, Scotland. I took this picture there too. Somewhere, I have the color version...

I was'nt suggesting that you take one of their tours, only that you could use their site for the list of locations.

Just for your info, Gloucester is about 3 hours drive from Cambridge (in good traffic - which rarely happens :S ) and be prepared for the shock of your life as petrol is about £1.30 a LITRE out here and diesel is £1.34. Yes, LITRE, not gallon. Just thought I'd pre warn! That 6 hour round trip will cost around £50-60. I only know as I do it myself when I visit friends :)

Scotland by car is closer to 12 hours drive from cambs, you'd be better off flying (trains are ridiculously expensive)

Just a heads up :)

In looking over everything, I think I'm going to try to hit up some of the London locations and Oxford. I would love to make it to Scotland, but I think that's a completely different trip all together.

The great thing about this is my husband's job is paying for the rental car and a very generous daily stipend. So for gas money and such...I'm good to go!

Kings Cross Station is a pretty easy option for the train platform I guess.
Although not quite as scenic as previous suggestions!

Hey! That is where Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod is from. :)
You go there and you get two movies for the price of one!

So I've been here in the UK for the past week and I finally got to check out Oxford this weekend to see some of the filming locations.

I went to Bodleian Library to see where they filmed some of the Hogwarts library scenes and found out you can't actually take photos there. :( So I was disappointed. It was really cool to see though, and boy are there so OLD books in there. Wow. I did get a few photos in the Divinity school where they filmed some of the Hospital Wing scenes.

Then we headed to ****** College to see the staircase where McGonagall greets the first years in Sorcerer's Stone as well as the Great Hall which was the inspirations for Hogwart's Great Hall. I wore my Slytherin uniform under my winter coat so I could get some fun photos there and as soon as I took my coat off and got in place, I got mobbed by other tourists wanting photos with me. Pretty funny.

Last we went to Blenheim Palace where they filmed Snape's flashback in Order of the Phoenix. Unfortunately, the book I got in Oxford about filming locations doesn't explain the exact location of the shot and its not marked on the grounds of the Palace either. So that was a bit of a bust. Though the Palace and grounds are fantastic anyway. I loved the Marlborough Maze, which is the second largest hedge maze in the world!

I wish I'd had this filming locations book before going out to Oxford because it lists more places than I knew about previously and I missed some things. Ah well...next time.
