Vintage Jungle Explorer costume - please help!

Aloha Everyone - I'm thinking of putting together a vintage jungle explorer/safari outfit. I'm thinking a Dr. Livingstone-esque British style number circa 1890-1920. Pith helmet, safari shorts, canvas shirt, some pouches, cool shoes (if I can afford them), etc. A good mental image would be Shrunken Ned at Disneyland. Any of you talented folks know of some good sites to poke around at?

Mahalo,
Tiki

Thanks - I'll check the site out.
Wish I could build a time machine and zip back to the Banana Republic store circa 1986. Man, they had some awesome safari/historical style clothes back then!

I remember. Back when they actually carried merchandise that reflected their name... :lol

I think you (and I) just showed your age.

We spent all of $25 on her costume. You could do a great one for under $100 and the majority of your pieces can come from the Thrift Store.

A 1890s - 1920 Man would not have worn shorts. The graduation into long pants was a milestone for Males back then, and was up until the mid Depression. It was a sign they were growing up and "Short Pant" was for children only. The closest thing would have been a jodhpurs. Knickers were for adolescents as well.

I have a size 13.5 - 14 foot and I found a pair of Dehner Dressage Boots for $100 on a Boot Fetish site, by just doing a search on Google. Best money ever spent. You can find riding boots pretty cheap now, if you want to go that way. These are not cheap.

Let me know if you have more questions, I have tons more links, this time period and style is my forte.

Goggles on Pith Helmet look good as well.

If doing a Man and Woman combo, the Woman should be tattered but clean, with dirt on one cheek, and the Man should be un-tattered but dirty. Watch any old Jungle Movie and that's the way it is.

We just came back from Kauai and spent the last two night in Honolulu. I couldn't handle it after the quiet of Kauai so we ended up in your home town. Next time you can buy me a drink.

Ua ola no i ka pane a ke aloha.
Laffo.

I got an article on the subject of what African explorers actually wore back in the day. Forget the "Great White hunter" in his slouch hat with leopardskin band. Think English country clothing of the shooting and fishing variety. Tweeds, Corduroys and Moleskins with matching facial topiary that would make a Civil War general blush. Send me a PM if you are interested.

I think he wanted more of a stereotyped Explorer, he mentioned Shrunken Ned at Disneyland.
I found a great corduroy jodhpur source, they're closing them out at $20:

Mutton Chops or a full Darwin Beard are a must. There will be Mustache Wax in the Jungle, you Savage.
Great White Hunter is too late for the time period, that would be late 30's early 50's. Hatari.
You can also think along the lines of the Zulu Wars.

A HUGE mahalo for all the info - Laffo, you are the best! Great sites - I'll be able to put something awesome together for sure. So sad I missed you last time you were in Kailua. I know what you mean about Waikiki - I simply can't figure out why tourists go there. Myself, I am a Lanai or Big Island man - but Kailua is mighty nice too :) Please let me know next time you visit - I owe you a tiki tile!
