Vader's Severed Hand

Hello all,

This is one of thoes obscure props that I have wanted to do for a while. I definetly took some creative licence here but that's ok since you never actually see it.

I built a hand skeliton with coat hanger wire and Sculpey for the finger sections. I drilled into a piece of wood for the palm. I padded the hand/palm with some scrap material. I cut up one of thoes cheap costume vader gloves I got in October with the intention of doing this.(anyone need a left hand Vader glove :lol ?) I lined the opening of the glove with ground strap. I took a bunch of various style electrical wire and cable and a few pieces of aluminum and just hot glued each piece in. I hit the glove with some sandpaper for a little weathering. It is quite heavy as you can imagine.

This was a fun one, I hope you like it.

Thanks Wackychimp.

I like the idea. However you should try to torch it so it looks burnt from the lazer.
Also i whould have used the larger wires in center as a core for the arm.

An idea is to look at the structure of the arm on a sceleton and use the large wires where the bones usually are. I am sure if you contact Hyperdyne labs he could possible make some glowing effect in the wireing as well. That guy is an master of electronics.

Hey everybody let's give Darthmagpie a hand for this cool and original Project. :D

Seriously though great job. :)

While I love the idea, there are some things you should consider about the construction.

1) With all the wires, there's no skeletal structure. Since we never get a look at the wrist in ROTJ, try using Ani's robo arm as an idea as to what the skeletal structure looks like. It will increase the realism 10 fold. Right now, it looks like Luke cut into one of Verizon's junction boxes.

2) Since the hand was cutoff with a lightsaber and not a turkey carver, the wires should end at the same point as the glove and not stick out further. Plus, there should be singe marks and melted wires.

It's a great starting point, but just needs some refinement :thumbsup

The 2 aluminum pieces that ended up close to the back of the had were designed to replicate a bone structure. they exited the wrist at an angle like a V and i couldn't get the large wires in there.

I do agree that the wires should be a little black and melted. That was my originall plan........I forget what happened to that plan.

My plan was to mirror the wires from the side of Vaders wrist that we see as apposed to Anakin's Skelital hand from ROTS.

Uneaven with no skelital structure.

I understand what you were going for, but since you're creating a non-canon piece, you have the chance to make it as you see fit (or as it should be). Plus, we know what it should look like based on the robotic arm we saw in episodes II and III.

Just my 2 cents

I will have HD caps of the severed hand up soon on my website. Those would be a great reference for you. I think its a great start though.

Looks cool to me. It is hard to find a happy meduim between what the originals show and the prequels. I like it.

Thanks for the compliments. It was fun. There are many props that take serious time to get meticulously exact but it is also gratifying to put something like this together in a few hours and it is surprising the attention that it gets amung many sabers and the full size Vader.

Very cool prop idea. Makes a great saber diplay stand. :)
Now, how about a bloody one for Lukes? :D

Here's an idea - why not add fibre optic strands inside some of the wire sleeve (instead of the wire) lit by a red/orange LED, for that 'still hot' look?

Something like those cheap fibre optic wand / flashlight toys would work, as the ones I've seen the fibre section just slots in.

Looks like they used a mannequin hand as the base for origina propl, the center attachement rod is very common on mannequin hands.

I saw that and thought the same thing.

Nice project magpie, lets see more progress pics. Love it.
