Vader ESB Mounting Ring ... what is it?

This is gonna sound crazy, but it always reminds me a (resin cast of a??) ring seal used on British toilet basins.

Would explain why the Empire have S*** for brains.

(not really, the Empire are cool - just couldn't miss the opportunity for the gag) :cool

Something akin to this examples...maybe...

I've posted above two photo's of the stunt mask with the sort of ring we'ree looking for.

JB (John Boero, Canada) makes his own resin casts of this part, they look good, as does another Vader builder out there who is unable to supply such a kit to me. We have to find this part.

SITH for brains? :lol

I really think it's some sort of pipe flange.

Check this out - I just spotted this part lying on my workbench; it's part of a tumble dryer extraction unit but it's the same sort of thing(still a pipe flange). Not exact to the pics of the stunt mask, but the size isn't far off:

Crazy that we were just talking about this and a few minutes later I happened to spot it lying on the bench.:lol

There's another part which comes with the kit that fits inside perfectly to a combined height of approx 2.5" :

It's a nice secure fit, but removable and there's a little lip which would stop the inside ring scratching the top of Vader's faceplate when the dome was on.

These are made from plastic and would be easy to trim down to replicate the proportion seen in the rear view of the fencing helmet pic posted earlier. The height could also be adjusted and the upper ring epoxied / glassed to the inside top of the dome.

Even if it's not the exact sort of flange they used, you could mod one of these kits to make it pretty darn close. Not all that much to modify either, mostly just trim away the bottom circular lip to make it thinner:

And I can offer these kits at the special price of...nah, just kidding. ;)

If anyone want to try and mod one, it's a Wickes Universal Tumble Drier Venting kit here's their website http://www.wickes.co.uk/

The price for the kit (from Wickes) is £11.99 - http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/713007&bklist=

It's possible these kits are fairly universal worldwide, so your local hardware store may carry something silmilar if you are based in the US.

Al

We just need to know what kind of plastic the ORIGINAL was made from and that would be the final nail. Unless it was recasted with resin, or fiberglass...

It looks to me like it was cast in resin.

I suppose it woluld make sense to modify one flange then cast that several times for the different helmets.

Bloody incredible work Al, it was meant to be. I work in the electrical home appliances industry so I'll make some enquiries over the next few days.

Once again, well done. Spread the word :)

Well, mine is made of a resin, it's the same colour of the one in the above pic, but has overspray of black. To be honest, my 20thC is a bit beat up (dome, not mask) and, I think has had some repairs. The paint is nice, but not the best.

I think you guys are on the right track...plumbing of some sort.

Cheers,

Kraig

NHM, I think the diameter is the same - the overhead pic I posted above is deceptive as the ring positioning was wrong and it was taken at a slight angle.

Just got home from work so after dinner, I'll roughly trim down the bottom lip and try to get an exact matching picture later.:thumbsup
