Vader Cloak attachment ROTS

I understand the OT chest armor has a 'hook' for the cloak chain to go over, to hold the cloak in place. However the ROTS version does not appear to have it. How is the cloak chain (and cloak) kept in place? What stops the chain getting all tangled between the neck and the chest?

Also I was wondering where I could get a good copy of the chain, does anyone know what it was for in the 'real world'.

I know someone here will know, please tell me:)

Not sure what they used in the movie, but I have my cape attached to the armor with industrial velcro and use the clips on the cape to hold the chain. The clips are hidden so it looks like the chain is going all the way through the cape.
The chain used is called Aglok. It's used to hold bundles of plants, etc. together. You can find it at a local nursery store or can buy some from SA on Ebay.

If you search hard enough around here, maybe in the archives, I think you will find that someone identified the ROTS chain as from New Zealand plumbing supplies. Like a toilet pull chain or something.

I can tell you that I spent a LOT of time trying to find something close here in the US without any luck.

The plastic Aglok chain mentioned above is the original trilogy chain, not ROTS.

'Clips'??

yes, but CUZ its no longer available, most of us ROTS vaders just use the AGLOK chain.

heres how mine attaches:

theres hooks mounted in the armor, and the chain connects to it and hangs freely. the cape clips on via some small clasps on the cape that connect to the hooks.

Here's the link to the 501st of how to make a ROTS chain from Aglok.

Yeah, the cape has clips on it that you would normally use to attach the cape to the hooks on the chest armor.

The picture above is great but I can't see how the chain attaches to the armor. Also I saw the 501st thread you posted but did not understand about the cable ties and lobster clips. Could anyone explain. Finally my armor does not have any clips, that I can see. Should it have them or is there another way of going it? If I need them A) what are they exactly and B) Where do I get them from (in England) and how / where do I fix them. Many thanks for all your help!

I came up with that method of making a ROTS chain from aglok chain. You can blame me!! :lol

The 4 inch (100mm) cable ties are used to re-connect the square links of the aglok after you cut them apart. That way, they flex more like a real chain would. In person, the chain looks pretty good. If you look at it real close (a couple of inches away) you can tell its not a real chain, but from any other distance the effect is really great.

My ROTS chest armor is the Rubies Supreme one. I know, Rubies? Ick! Well, although its not fibreglass, it is reasonably accurate and looks acceptable with a re-paint. Anyway, it has a metal loop on each shoulder that the cape is attached to with big lobster claws on the cape. The stock chain is attached to those loops too. I cut off the stock Rubies chain and put small lobster claws on my home-made chain to attach it easily to those loops. Its easy to remove that way too.

Cheers!

My armor doesn't have clips or holes either.
Refer to the 501st link below, it'll show you how to attach your cape to the armor using velcro to give it that ROTS look. It also shows how to attach your cape to the bells on the chest armor so that the cape will stay in the proper place.

BTW,Nice tutorial on the ROTS chain Huzz! :thumbsup

just save my pic above, and you can enlarge it on the hooks area. i split a link and a single link also. i slipped the single link on hooks, then the end links of chain. then used hotglue to glue the single link to the end links, makin sure i put the slits opposite each other, so it wouldnt come off.

my hooks were put on when it was made by Porty himself. you can use a variety of things, such as a cotter pin, with a single hole drilled thru the armor, and a small washer slip up the pin, then inserted down hole, and ends spread out flat on the underside, and epoxied or resined down underneath.

a clothes hanger rod, a brass rod, etc... lots of things.

Thnkas for this, although I cant see where the velcro needs to go on the shoulder bells, any help? Alo I THINK I now understand what Huzz is saying. Would I be correct that leaving the Agloc as is does not look right so attaching each Agloc peice to the next with cable ties is the way to go? I'm really sorry to sound dim but this is my first venture into this costuming world, let alone trying to do it myself!!

Lan is right - that is exactly what I did!!

Re - velcro and the shoulder bells, if you look through this thread by Seduced:

http://www.darthlarsen.com/sithlord...2&t=1955&sid=add9620ab0e4d70065be693108354cce

in particular, the second page, you should find everything you need to know about attaching the cape to the bells etc. I used Seduced's method and it works great. You'll also see a lot of my questions to Seduced - so don't worry about asking questions!!

Thanks Huzz!!! I have had a quick look and It looks really great. The armor is really top notch. I have tried to register but am not sure if I will be acepted as I am not a member of the 501st. If I can't join would you mind forwarding (or even answering) any questions I had?

As far as your chain method goes how did you attach the ends to the chest armor? Glue, drilling or really small peices of velcro?

Ask as many questions as you like! You should be able to join that board even if you are not a 501st member.

I have the Rubies chest armor. It has, on each shoulder, a metal loop. The cape attaches to the loop with a clip on the cape. Also, I attached my chain to that metal loop with a small lobster claw tied to each end of the chain that I made.

That way, I can remove the chain when I repaint the armor. And the repaint is something I have to do soon.

also, the loops come off on the rubies.

turn it over, and underneath each one is a circle of rubber, peel that off, then pry up the 2 ends on each loop, straight up. then push the loops out. watch for that lil washer, and dont lose it.

you then can slip the last end links onto the loops, and reinsert them, place washers back on, and bend the end tabs back down and replace the rubber cover washers.

thats what i did on my rubies armor to attach my aglok chain, and replace the old rubies chain.

Lan's suggestion is a good one. Doing it that way, you would not need lobster claws on the end of the chain. Removing the chain would be more of a pain though.
