Okay,

So. From this ANH HD still...

And this 'Art of Star Wars' Chest box photo...

Overlayed at 50%...

and at 100%...

I'm pretty sure that that is the screen used ANH chest box with some decals added to match
the ESB/ROTJ config. That left hand rod leans at the precise angle.

Any opinions?

Cool analysis...are you able to distinguish any paint wear similarities on the rocker switches? One other telltale thing you can check out is the relative height/spacing of each of the rocker switches to each other. There's a specific pattern. Obviously we have a larger version of that screencap, but is that the best photo of the Art of Star Wars? I don't remember that image but then again I had the original version of the book from the late 70s.
I think you may very well be right about it...parts were certainly reused between ANH and ESB.

Hey.

Well I think I've seen other photos of that chest box (was it in Cking's Vader gallery maybe?) and it appeared to be a resin casting of the original ANH chest box. The close-up shots I remember show that a chunk of one of the rods had chipped off revealing the resin inside, which matched the colour of the other parts of the piece where the paint had worn off. You could also see that all components were cast together as one piece and painted afterwards. The running theory (which definitely seems reasonable with all the photo reference we've seen) is that the screen used ANH chest box was made up of the individual real metal parts, wooden rocker switches, and the found plastic "buttons", all assembled together, and not a resin casting of the whole thing.

So a one piece resin casting of the original would have all the components match exactly, as you say the rods do perfectly, but if the original was made up of the individual parts, then I don't think the AOSW one is it. Actually, looking closer at the photo you posted, I think I can see the top edge of the left rod (as looking at it) has been chipped off, just like I remember from those close-ups.

Excellent comparison though. The angles and scaling match up perfectly.

Regards,

MJC.

Does anyone have any good pictures of these 'casts'?

I'd be really interested in seeing some of the detailing.

:thumbsup

Ditto...

Are you sure its just a casting? I guess it could be. Hard to tell. But check this out - it could be the same box with some repainting and added stickers. At ILM I do definitely recall finding a box like that with little funny letters added above the rockers.

And while it may have been a casting it was definitely fiberglass from behind with the rods added separately. It was not a solid block of resin.

Pretty cool detective work though as far as origins go... :)

Definitely a resin casting. You can tell by the poorly painted red/green pushbuttons. The real chestbox had real pushbuttons....which were moulded in color.......there would never be a need to paint them....plain and simple. I'm positive it's a casting off the real one however.............other examples of promotional suits had resin castings also.

Dave :)
