Announcement User tagging and quoting

We have implemented a new feature which allows members to be mentioned in posts via tagging. How is this done? Simply add the @ symbol (no space) directly in front of a members name while typing your post and the member will be automatically tagged in the post (slightly more rudimentary, but similar to how Facebook's tagging system works). Members will be notified when they are tagged in a post.

Additionally, when you quote a member, they will now be notified that they have been quoted!

Why is this being done? It helps stimulate interaction and responses by altering members to discussions that pertain to them.

For example; to make sure Alan Castillo pays attention to this post, I am typing " @ [no space] Allan Castillo" below and Alan will be tagged in this post and notified that he has been tagged. Let's see how long it takes him to respond.

Alan Castillo can't possibly get to this post fast enough to prove our point...

As a side note, the system does have some difficulties with names that include odd characters and a few other issues... so it isn't perfect. If you find problems, please let us know.

Wanna bet

Works perfect :). Get the same notification you get with PMs and it tells you what was said. Good job!

Less than a minute. So, be honest... did you just see the post, or did you respond to the notification?

I saw the notification email & came to the board. Saw the notification 'pop-up & clicked it. Had a 'hard time' figuring out where to go to see it because the text is not very clear. Need tweaking :)

Also, the text on the 'list' needs tweaking to make it stand out a more ;)

And Alan, do you SERIOUSLY have that ugly old LOL smiley uploaded to your server?!?

Yes, I did :(

That one, plus a few others ;)

As if I need to tell you, I am a very highly emotional person
lol.gif
.

When I write & insert emoticons, they have to 'click' with me & express, in my eyes, exactly what I am feeling.

This guy .... :lol .... looks like a quacking duck, & is not 'me'.

This guy ....
lol.gif
... has a hearty full laugh, and is me ... coz that's exactly how I laugh ... full belly & uncontrollable
lol.gif

I also think this guy....:darnkids ... looks 'meaner' in red, like so
darnkids.png
... and he's supposed to be mean ... coz he's grumpy
lol.gif
. The other one looks like tweety bird & I can't relate to him as a grumpy old man
lol.gif

I also uploaded a few others that I use here & there :) (jaw-drop guy etc :cool).

Alright... stop using that old retarded LOL. I have put the new one in for you.

You aren't going to win on the love one because the old one wasn't 16X16. Crazy as it may sound, there has got to be some law around here (check that... a movie reference!)

Very neat feature! I can see this being very handy for letting someone know they're part of a discussion, without needing to search manually, or PM.

Exactly. For the past few years, we have worked very hard on building up the site, bringing in new people and increasing the number of people who visit the site on a daily basis. We have been VERY successful at doing this (some might say we have been TOO successful). We now have more than 10 times the people visiting here on a daily basis than we did 3 years ago! Instead of continuing to try to increase our numbers, we are content to allow them to grow naturally, and instead are going to focus on getting more interaction between those of you who are already here! User tagging is one of several things we plan to implement that will help with this effort!

And I just got the email letting me know I'd been quoted. :thumbsup (I've disabled the email notification for that particular one, but having the notification on the forum is great)

Looks like a lot of cool new features in the user tagging options. :cool

I concur that the old smiley is much better than the new one. You don't have to wait for it to start laughing to know if it's a smile or a laugh. ;)

I get that it's to encourage people to talk but I find it a little annoying when a notification pops up and it's not a PM. I'll get over it, it just clutters an otherwise simple system for me.

I can now see that tagging will be the new rep! Who's gonna be tagged the most? :lol

I'll say Alan Castillo
