United Cutlery Hobbit Sword Plaque

Hey Guys,
I know this may sound like a crazy question, but I have a bit of a problem.

I received my first United Cutlery Hobbit sword today, the sword of Bilbo Baggins.

Now I love the sword and there is nothing wrong with it, but when I looked at the plaque there are no pre-drilled holes on the front of the plaque for the rubber-tipped fixture screws, that hold the sword.

I've re-read the instructions five times now and they keep saying the same thing, there should be pre-drilled holes on the front of the plaque, yet on mine there are none.

So my question is this, should the plaque have pre-drilled holes on the front or not ? Are the instructions wrong or should I be sending my plaque back. lol

Thanks!

Sounds like they put the old instruction sheet with it. There should be two sets of holes on the back, two wider apart to mount the sword in the scabbard, and two closer together to mount just the sword. You can screw the L shaped screws into the back to punch the holes through the front, or simply press through to the front with a thin nail point or needle - the holes end almost to the surface of the other side, so there is not much wood to go through. Then screw the L screws into the front of the two holes you chose to use.

Thanks for the info Kit Rae, I was a bit worried for a while there. lol

So just to be sure, this is not a defect ? None of the plaques have pre-drilled holes on the front ?

I think it's a defect, since when I ordered a Witchking sword, it had pre-drilled holes.
You can do these holes yourself, which will be worth it, instead of waiting for a replacement.
Just place the sword on top of the plaque as a guide and mark where you want to drill.:cool:thumbsup

Hey RelicMaker, did yours have pre-drilled holes on the back or the front ?

I just checked my Plaque and I do have four very small pre-drilled holes on the back of the plaque, so yeah I guess I can try and fix it.

Still, for the price you'd think UC would have it all ready to go.

It's been so long, I can't say for certain if they were drilled all the way through, but since the sword never came with a scabbard, I'm pretty sure they were drilled.

Well I've contacted the seller, he says he's going to check one of his and see if it's the same as mine or not.

So I'll know either way soon enough I guess.

Well I don't own a drill and I'm a bit worried about damaging the front of the plaque if I use something to punch the holes through the front.

Like I said, quick fix or not - after spending $200 bucks on this, you'd think UC would have it all ready to go and it shouldn't need a fix.

Just my thoughts, it's a bit disappointing.

While I agree, you didn't pay $200 for the plaque :thumbsup

To avoid damage, place some painters tape to the front where the holes will be. Using the screws provided (like Kit suggested) screw them into the holes on the back side until they poke through the front. Remove the screws, remove the tape, then screw in the front

lol True, but still that's not the point. The point is for a high priced item like this, nothing should need fixing - sword or plaque.

Anyway, thanks for the info! I might give it a try. Still I'm going to wait and see what the sellers says, maybe mine is a one off. However if it's not, then I'll do the fix. :)

Will this be the way forward from now on, Kit? Will the Orcrist plaque be the same?

No. The Orcrist scabbard was not confirmed at the time we finalized that display (and still is not), and we did not know the scabbard would ever be reissued for Glamdring when we did the new display for the Hobbit version.

Anyone can add the wider spaced holes for displaying any one these swords in scabbard though. You just lay it over the display, mark you hole locations, and drill pilot holes with a 3/32" drill bit.

The extra scabbard mount option was actually something we set up back for the original LOTR Sting display, as there were many requests for it. I don't think it was ever added until now.

I just got my hobbit version of glamdring and when i went to put the screws thru the back to open the holes in the front it splintered the finish on the plaque!
Also, my plaque only had two holes predrilled on the back, not four, so i dont know if they were the sword ones or the scabbard ones.
I only had one set of screws too.
Maybe i will contact uc and see about getting a replacement plaque.
I have other uc products from lotr and this is my first issue with thier products.
Kit, can you help at all with this please?
Thanks!

There was a guy on here a long time ago selling older UC sword "seconds". I got a Sting that looked nearly perfect, but the pre-drilled holes on the face of the plaque were misaligned.

So at one time, there were pre drilled holes for that plaque...

Just gives me a reason to make my own plaque :cool

I know this is an old thread but does anyone know where I can buy some of the L shaped rubber tipped and sleeved fixture screws from. I bought a UC Boromir sword and plaque from another RPF member but the screws are missing. Any help would be much appreciated.
