UK Antiques Roadshow tonight - possible original Star Wars helmet

If you're in the UK, be sure to check out the Antiques Roadshow tonight, as it looks like they could well be showcasing an original Star Wars helmet. This week's roadshow is from Chenies Manor in Buckinghamshire and The Prop Store Of London just happen to have their premises right next door (I live about a mile away), so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's an original helmet from their collection - maybe their Scout or a Stormtrooper. Definitely worth checking out anyway!

As far as I can tell, this is the second of the three screen-used heroes. I don't think the notched cog hero has been located yet. Of course two TIEs were used as the basis for AT-AT drivers. One of those is located and the other was stolen. I see on StarWarsHelmets.com that a few background TIEs are also in individuals' collections.

It was nicely done piece , far better than the spin put on it in the general press.Fiona was just being her usual tease !!! I guess 50K would make most peoples jaws drop to the floor! Some of the best pictures i've ever seen of a genuine Tie helmet.

I got quite annoyed when she flicked it after announcing it was worth £50k. Doubt she'd had done that with a painting or pottery worth that much.

This again proves that if the object isn't mainstream like a painting, sculpture, or something the regular Joe (no matter how rich he is) understands, most people simply cannot grasp its value. It is so different from items they know, that they don't get it.

Was this filmed quite a while ago? I spoke to Stephen Lane via email early 2013 to ask about this helmet and he said he had sold it when he bought another hero TIE helmet.

I only wanted to see a photo of the back of the helmet to see if it had the same box as the other helmets on it as I was going to try to make a nice replica of it.

The Prop Store then started exhibiting this hero TIE helmet.

That got a furrowed brow from me also. Quite a trivializing gesture given the usual respect given over to not just rare, but all items brought in.

I usually watch the show and part of the appeal is learning about an objects story even if on initial glance it's not immediately to my taste. Part of me wants to be generous and say that it's great some airtime was given to an area of craftsmanship people overlook, and may even encourage people to reconsider inherited items previously thought as little more than tat.

The framing of the item was peculiarly disrespectful though. What could have been a briefly enlightening piece had a whiff of circus freak show about it.
