TNG Medkit

While working on a couple other projects, I decided to build another TNG Medkit, after finally having found measurements of the screen-used version to work from. This is how it came about:

04/27/13
(Traced pattern onto sheets of 1/4" PVC foam board and cut out all parts, glued together, test-fitted Mk VI Tricorder)

(Also plan on scratch-building Rick Sternbach's concept Medkit, but that's best left for another WiP thread, I think)

04/29/13
(Cut out slots from adjustable shoulder strap and recessed section in between, inserted recessed panel)

05/01/13
(Started rounding corners/edges, put internal structure in, installed fake LEDs in top panel, built Tricorder storage compartment)

05/03/13
(Applied first coat of primer, cut out door for lower storage compartment)

05/06/12
(Marked off areas for plant-on placement, received medical Caduceus logo for door)

05/24/13
(Cut out all plant-ons and handle for door, also assembled Hypospray storage compartment for inside of door)

(Primered/painted all plant-ons, door and Hypospray storage compartment, applied medical Caduceus logo to door)

(Further rounded corners/edges, puttied/sanded surfaces more, primered again, test-fitted Mk VII Medical Tricorder)

What sets this one apart from my first attempt (done years ago, and sold incomplete) is that this one is based on measurements of a screen-used piece, whereas my previous build, although within 5% of the actual size of the screen-used version, was noticeably oversized:

(Compared to someone else's build based on my earlier measurements)

Also, the use of different materials (1/4" PVC foam board, instead of layered sheet styrene, like for my first attempt) allows for a much lighter build, and the ability to adequately round out the edges/corners to match the screen-used version.

The storage compartment up top can hold all generations of Medical Tricorder (Mk VI, Mk VII, Mk X), though a foam lining would be required to properly hold the much smaller Mk X design. The completed piece will also include the storage compartment for a standard Hypospray and some medicinal vials.

Four and a half months later, now that I've managed to clear most of the commissioned builds off my workbench, I was able to put a little more time into the Medkit:

Pretty much all that's left to do is get the hinge for the compartment door, a proper shoulder strap and lining the Hypospray compartment with felt, then it'll be done and I'll finally have one to proudly display in my collection :)

Eric,
That's a beauty! Would you be willing to share/sell a set of templates ? I've always wanted to build one of these!

I dig it. Great project and nice improvement over your first attempt.

Sometimes it's hard to redo the same project from scratch but the outcomes are usually twice as good as the first. You learn so much by the time you've finished the first. It's obly once you've completed the project that you finally understand how to properly tackle it.

Thanks, Cameron! Sure, I'd be willing to offer a set of templates. Mine were done using the good ol' pen-to-paper technique though, as I have no experience in computer drafting. Also don't have any software to do that with, lol. I could mail you a set, or at least provide you with accurate dimensions.

I want to build one of these now! It's a big improvement over your other attempt I think.

Thanks, Ruddinger! This one was, hands down, a huge improvement over my initial attempt years ago. It took some time, but I'd say it was definitely worth it :cool

Brilliant work there, I sooooo want one of these :D:thumbsup

Thanks, Drac! In case you didn't know, I do take commissioned builds, lol. In fact, I've already got another RPF-er interested in me building them one like this. Of course, that wouldn't be until warmer weather again as I don't have a properly ventilated work area, so do all of my priming/painting in the garage and the weather's too cold now to allow the paint to adhere properly. I mean, I could do the assembly, puttying, and sanding in the meantime but as far as priming or painting it that would have to wait until springtime or early summer.

Thanks, Nick! I definitely agree this second attempt is leaps and bounds better than the first. I'm very pleased with the end result. It's true in that every project I've ever done more than one build of (ie. small-scale TOS Shuttlecraft) shows improvement with each one. I even learned a few things this time around that I'd do a bit different on the next build to make the whole process easier for me. It's an on-going learing curve.

Great looking kit!

Thanks, dude! How's yours coming along? Have you been able to do anything with the dimensions I gave you? :confused

You are correct this I did not know lol, I would love to attempt a build like this myself but not sure if I'd get the same quality lol, I'll keep it in mind though cheers :D:thumbsup

Not a thing... can't locate supplies here, just biding my time till I get back to the US.

That's unfortunate. Sorry to hear that, dude. Well, I look forward to seeing what you can do with your own build ;)

Well then, now you know, lol. If you decide you'd be interested in that, just give me a shout.

Wow, that gorgeous.

Thanks, Snow Builder! It's been a really fun personal project for me. This piece has always been one of those "holy grail" type props ever since I first got into the hobby about twelve years ago, so it's great to see I'm so close to having it finished for my own collection :D

Finally managed to finish detailing the inside of the lower compartment door:

Looks pretty close to the screen-used original I based mine on, if I do say so myself.

Still have to find a hinge and the shoulder strap, already bought a few chicago screws for the ends of the strap.

So very close to the end, now :D

Thanks! I never thought I'd ever be able to own an accurate one of these. So, this has been a long time coming :)

I think that everyone has certain props that will make them turn back into a little kid again. For me, this would be one of those.

Fantastic build! I may have to harass for your the dimensions.

Yep, this one would certainly fall into that category for me, too. And thanks. I'd be more than happy to share the dimensions with you. Just shoot me a PM ;)

Having recently "rediscovered" my childhood love of ST:TNG (the show that made me interested in props) I enjoyed reading through your build on this, really great work!

The build looks fantastic! I am wanting to build one myself as I am the CMO for my ship. Where did you get the dimensions? Would you be willing to send them to me?

Thanks!

Michael
