Tips for map making in illustrator!

Hi All..
Im a photoShop vet, but Illustrator noob.. haha Anyhow, I wasnt to make a copy of a map I found a bad photo of online... Wondering though..

In illustrator, how do you get the little dashes that are often seen to represent trails?

Also, when they show mountains from above, the shading looks very dotted... Is that a filter?

Open the stroke window. Windows --> Stroke

When that window is open in the top left corner there should be an arrow to show more options. Once that drops down there will be a tool for making the link stroke a dashed line. Whats great is you get to tailor the dash sequence.
