Tips For a Friend

So I have a friend who is working making the Havel armor set from Dark Souls and he could use some advice on how to approach making the armor. He wants to make sure it is light weight but still look solid. I was considering using child play mats ( I forget the name of the foam) but I think he is afraid it will end up looking like its made of those cheap foam gravestone props you see at Halloween. I told him that that probably just depends on how you paint and yadda yadda yadda. Anyhow I came here to ask for some tips if anyone has any as far as ideal materials for such a project as well as a good method for painting and getting the right texture

I'd use foam. It's light, easy to shape, and you can build quick. Plus the armor you linked to doesn't have a lot of complicated shapes. As for end appearance it's all about his seams, smoothing, and paint. You can show/hide a lot with a good paint job.
