Finally getting to work on my Tie Pilot costume a little. I painted the armor but not the chest box. I painted a rubies helmet but got lucky and scored a Fang helmet with Elvis greeblies.

That is Slick!!! My favorite Helmet of the Star wars series, I love how they integrated the Stormtrooper faceplate into a pilot helmet... thanks for the cool pics!

That Fang looks killer, are these still available from the Sarge? Have to say, thats a lovely coat of black, will look great as a display bust...something im now looking into :cool

Not sure if they are available; I painted this one a year ago and the guy decided to sell it. So I grabbed it!

how did you get it to be so glossy?? i have a rubies TIE helmet as well and I want to make it look like that!

Yes please :) I have a Rubies (it was damaged and cheap and all I could afford ;) ) but would like to get it nice and clossy. Three costumes planned for it: regular TIE, Femme TIE and Mara as TIE ;)

I first took out the lenses and openned up the eye holes a bit. Then I heated the ear pieces and put a paint stick in the helmet to jold them straight while they cooled. So far they are staying that way. The rubies is very warped in that area.

Then I used a grey scotch brite pad to scuff the plastic before using the PPG One Choice adhesion promotor system on it. Painted the grey; then the black. After that I clear coated the helmet, baked it then scuffed it with 600 grade sand paper and clear coated again to make sure it won't lose any gloss. By th way the clear used was PPG DC3000

Tetmatek fails to mention he is a professional automotive painter. :) And he does commission work for props.

Also to this day he has yet to buy an actual camera!!!! :rolleyes

LOL!
It's true - he really needs to get a better camera to really show off his work. He has painted my Vader dome, and my Tie helmet - they are amazing.

You rock Eddie!

The holes are way bigger (the whole thing is larger) and they are not perfectly round as shown above.

I have the garden hose rig on the rubies. Joe did the mods for me on that one:$

Woah.. Im definitely not an automotive painter.. any idea on where i can get these things? or is there an easier non-a billion steps kind of way?
can i get somewhere near the same effect with something bought from walmart...? :)

and thanks for tip on fixing the warp. great idea. u just used a heat gun im guessing?

My bucket was really warped and a heat gun helped fix it up :) I still have a bit of work to do to get the ears looking good still. Heat gun and patience has worked for me so far :) Oh and mine has two large cracks in it repaired so far with vinyl glue (supposed to repair swimming pools and is so far holding strong).

I doubt Walmart would have anything comparable but your local auto paint store should be able to help. If you do not have an aircompressor they should be able to sell you a Preval set up (glass jar with an aerosol charger on top) to spray the paint like a spray can. The biggest thing about painting a Rubies or anything out of plastic is you must use an adhesion promotor or when you tape off the different colors it might pull off with the tape.

To staighten the Rubies I used a short wave infrared light by Edwin Trisk; but a heat gun will work the same.
