I Make Stuff

The Thor hammer is definitely nothing new here but i took a chance and bought a prop from an Ebay seller in China $90 free shipping. The images used in the listing were so similar to the one made by Lager toys i figured it would be good enough as an inexpensive display piece. Well I have to say I was extremely pissed when it showed up. The packaging was so lame the handle wasnt even attached to head anymore. The quality of this item was horrible but I really didnt want to hassle with an Ebay return or deal with the butt munch thats selling them. So I repaired and repainted. This post might help anyone else that may have one like this.
The handle itself was not horrible, The casting detail was ok and they installed a metal rod in the cast about 1/4 in diameter. Not sure how far through the handle it goes but the handle has nice feeling of weight. I drilled through end of handle and installed a bolt so when I reattach it there was something for the epoxy to grab. The tapered collar was way too small in diameter and distorted so i built that up with a few layers of bondo to fix. Then its just a paint job of chrome covered with floor polish then a faux leather job.

So since there was a big hole in the head already I thought to fill the airspace with some weight to make it feel less like a cheap toy prop. I found cheap $1.50 a tube caulking at Wal-mart that was heavier than all the others. 3 tubes went in, raised total weight from 3 lbs to 10. The head itself just required epoxy to fill cracks and a lot of bondo.

The silver used is rustoleum bright silver metallic. When paint felt about half cured i scuffed it carefully with a new unused medium grit sanding sponge. This will not work if paint is dried, you wont get the deep scratches. This worked very well when weathering is applied, I got the metal look i was happy with.

I am very new at weathering but this was a very easy chore. Just a dirty black wash with acrylic craft paints that stuck in my scratches nicely.

I dont have a lot of shelving or display table space so this needed a wall mount. I had some very nice wood leftover from a recent project, The center piece is bubinga and the dark pieces are tropical walnut. I had a custom vinyl label made for the brass name plate. All thats missing is the leather strap (the one it came with was plastic !)
If you are interested in getting one of these wall displays I can make you one for a fair price. Thanks for looking ! hope this might help some of you guys
