My uncle once made a samurai sword tsuba out of a cut and detailed meteorite he spent close to $3,000 on. Crazy guy.

Chris, you should look into getting some moldavite.

EDIT: Whooooop....read that name wrong....my mistake. :lol Moldavite is a tektite, regardless of the many folks that think otherwise.

I've got a couple that I can snap some pics of, if I can get my %*@ digicam to work...

My wife has a necklace with a moldavite piece on it. It was purchased at the same place I got my meteorite. Word is that it's getting scarce so the value of existing pieces will be going up.

Hey. Cool thread.

A few years backÂ… (Like 12.) There was a catalog that was mainly for museums to buy from. Well, they sold not-so-expensive ones and of course REALLY expensive ones too.

Well, I got a rather large hunk of the meteorite that made the giant Arizona crater. About 3 inches across. Iron and nickel. And very heavy, I show people and purposely drop it into their hands and watch their expression as they catch it. (I'm ready in case they drop itÂ…)

Bethany Sciences. That's the name. They were really nice too. I remember submitting for X number of grams and they didn't have that exact weight, so they gave me the next bigger sized one for the same price, and it was significantly bigger.

Very cool. I got a little bell-jar to cover it.

It's an interesting field currently....the market for meteorites is, of late, taking off (badoom ping.), so much appreciation to come for quality specimens.

I tracked down a couple of smaller (dime-sized) green tektites (moldavite) in the mess of my new apt, in case anyone's interested in snagging some "real" kryptonite.... :)

This thread has ignited a childhood dream of mine.

I always wanted a Meteorite but never knew you could buy them.

I have spent the past week doing a lot of research and I just might buy a 2" Gibeon Sphere from The Universal Collection.

According to the owner, Ron, they only carry the best spheres which makes them kind of pricey.

To those of you that own "pricey" meteorites, do you have a long term connection to it or them, or did it fade quickly?

Do you regret having bought it or do you still enjoy it?

Dropped a reply PM about the 2" sphere......that price is way over-the-top. We'll hook you up, gibeon-style, for less.....or w/ a larger, better piece. ;)

Sorry if you called and I missed it.....my cell's been on the fritz..... :rolleyes

Well I jumped in with both feet and bought a 2" Gibeon Sphere from The Universal Collection for what I consider to be a great price, I also bout a 2" Chondrite Sphere and both will come with a gold plated 6" caliper display.

They have a 30 day no questions asked refund policy and a lifetime trade up agreement, basically if you want a larger specimen they will let you trade up and give you credit for the full price of the one that you originally bought.

I would rather not disclose the price but this little fellow sold on eBay for $283.

It's about 1" in diameter and sold for $5.54 per gram.

The sphere I bought weighs over 500 grams and at that price would be worth $2771 and I paid A LOT less then that :)

Heres the auction:

Dang,

And I thought my piece of Parthenon marble was cool and unique. :confused

I collect weird things like that. Berlin wall fragment, Mt. St. Helens fragment, olive tree twig from Garden of Gethsemane, and now I want a piece of meteor.

A piece of Mars or the Moon would be really cool.

Boba Debt, I love my hunk of the Canyon Diablo meteorite. Granted, it's one of the least expensive ones, so that's why I have a larger chunk. And I bought it years ago.

Gav. Same strange tastes here too. I chipped off a piece of the Berlin Wall myself. Right place/Right timeÂ…

And another example, my siblings and I created a company called "A Piece of the Field" which bottled and packaged dirt from Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park. I love AUTHENTIC things.

I have two samples from Dhofar 019, the martian meteorite....had the sample's identities actually confirmed through Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at MIT...I take my "props" seriously :p

I received my meteorites today and I must say I was quite impressed.

Here is my Gibeon Nickel-Iron Sphere.

It is 1.930" in diameter and weighs 488 grams or 1.07 pounds

Gibeon.jpg

This is my NWA 868 Chondrite Sphere

It is 1.803" in diameter and weighs 177 grams or .39 pounds

NWA%20869.jpg

The only slight issue I have is the size of the Chondrite Sphere, I wanted them to be closer in diameter and .130" (1/8") makes the Chondrite look noticeably smaller.

However, The Universal Collection has a trade up policy so when they get a sphere in that is closer to 1.930" I can trade up to it :)

Pretty sweet. The Gibeon has a nice etching pattern. I really like the little stands to hold the spheres.

FANTASTIC pieces....a very cool combination of styles.

The chondrite piece has that "lunar" look.....so cool. :D

I am pretty excited about this hobby. I just had a guy cut and a nice peice of Brahin, which is a pallasite

It's 2" x 2" x 1/8" and weighs 51 grams or .112 pounds

The sides looked bowed but he assures me they aren't, it's just photographic distortion.

Nice display pieces to have, starting out with great samples of the three different types out there. :)

It's like Christmas here, I just received a 1900 gram Campo,

It's about 3.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches

I have a piece of a meteorite that I found while clear cutting some land for my brothers house a few years back. I had not thought much about it until this thread. I'll have to take a few pics of it and post it.
