The One That Got Away

A few weeks ago I was at a second hand store , ether in annapolis or glenburnie and I saw this really cool snake skin jacket.

It was a little tight but my mom is a seamstress so she could have done what ever needed to be done and no one would have been able to tell.

I saw zombie land last night and the jacket woody was wearing made me think about it again.

Is that something you just find around for 15 bucks all the time ?

(I thought there was a thread like this but I did a search and could not find it.)

I would assume that finding props in thrift stores would a be rare occurrence. Probably not as rare as finding a $50m Jackson Pollock painting, but rare.

I saw a short howard hughes/aviator type jacket at a charity shop in baltimore county. Just like the one magnoli sells for around $600. it was $20 and for some reason i didn't buy it...never going to see one of those again.
also had the chance to buy the viking boat prop/model from Doctor Who's Curse of Fenric at a Who convention...it went for pennies, around twenty quid if i remember.

I think he's asking if people have seen snakeskin jackets in thrift stores before, not if we've come across screenused stuff.

Here's a quick pic.

I'll take more detailed pictures later-

I've only seen snakeskin jackets at vintage stores that seem to specilize in aviator/leather type jackets. Not common but if you know where to look you'll find some options.

I have found some screen used costume items at thrift stores but bear in mind I live in burbank/LA and there's a couple of vintage shops here that specialize in turning around used/old studio wardrobe. Usual offerings are of a modern nature like Soap Operas, reality shows or kids/sitcoms like Hannah Montana. Clothes you can buy and wear around anywhere like any thrift shop.

The *cool* stuff usually comes out at Halloween. There's sometimes somce neat stuff to be had if your quick and you know what to look for. This is when the ex-Star Trek (DS9/VOY/ENT and movies) stuff shows up usually the alien colony/ future civilian clothing /extras stuff - no starfleet uniforms or principal actor garments though. Some neat finds my friends and I have found there over the last 2-3 years include:

Ralph Fiennes worn leather jacket from Strange Days
TOS Style Trek Boots as worn in DS9 "Trials and Tribble-ations"
Alien uniforms from The Coneheads
Cocktail dresses from Deal or No Deal
1860's Western/Frontier outfits from North and South
3 sets Nylon Tunic & Tights (2 stunt, 1 Billy Zane) from The Phantom ('96)
A Zorro Cape from Disney's Zorro and Son (1983)
A leather trenchcoat worn by Kevin Bacon (forget the film title right now)
A motorcycle jumpsuit used on SuperDave
WWII era MacIntosh Army Officer Jackets from obscure vintage 30's/40's war films
A set of Spacesuits worn in Galaxy Quest
Vintage Baseball uniforms from Cobb

We've stumbled on a few other finds too here and there at some other costume places that liquidate some of thier stock from time to time. Usually anything worn by the lead actors gets pulled from rotation to be sold off seperately through a high end auction. But sometimes stuff slips through the cracks and you find some gems for a song.

One such other find were 4 of the original leather jumpsuits worn by the Osmond brothers when the band was on tour in the 70s.

So in short- yes- they can be found but it's rare and you have to know where/when to look and have luck on your side.

Hmmm... tempting... NOT!

I purchased it from a reputable source, ReelClothes.com, and it came with a COA from the production studio. It was used by the stunt man, not Woody. The hero wardrobes were kept by the production company. The sun glasses were also screened used, and I have a pair of screen used Wichita boots... for my wife.

To the OP, if I do see one in a Maryland charity shop, I'll let you know. I wouldn't beat yourself up too much though, somewhere like Ten Car Pile Up in Towson carries that kind of thing and you might be able to negotate with them...i don't think they tend to be that expensive used. And you don't want to support the snakeskin trade by buying new...
