The Manhattan Project A-Bomb?

Has anyone here built a replica? I'd love to find out more about the one used in the film, that would be an fantastic piece to replicate and add to my collection.:D

I sat and studied the photos one day then decided I really was not old enough to lose my mind building such an intricate prop.

I think it would be HILARIOUS if someone would make an "A" bomb BBQ grill, the fins would be the base, and the lid would be the nose cone :lol

I'm sure it wouldn't be very PC, but I think it would be fun to own one.

As some of you know I worked on Nuclear Weapons in a past life, and I can tell you the Manhattan project movie was a source of great concern for the US Navy. The design was spot on and very scary that the film was released.

Of course there were some things the film did not show and probably did not know about, but the basic principle was very unsettling to weapons designers in the CNWDI area of the navy.

I would be very very careful when making this prop as a replica of even a non working device, you could with todays patriot act laws find your self in a bad place.

The back yard grill was already done, there was a news story a few years back where a spy bird caught an image of what looked like a bomb in someones yard only to find out it was a smoke pit for cooking.

We're talking about the movie from the 80s about the kid who sneaks into a government lab, steals urnanium and builds a homemade nuke as a science project, right? That was a cool looking bomb that he built. Salad bowls as the reflector, photo strobes...very cool.

This IS one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIES! I ordered the DVD special about a year ago and love it. I have ALWAYS wanted to replicate the movie prop. I know full well that it could be an issue if you were ever caught with it but since I'm pretty much law abiding... and it would ONLY be for display in my own home I wouldn't be to worried about it.

I'm with this guy though... if anyone can scare up some photos... not just screen caps, well those would be good too... I would LOVE it! I would have to amass quite a bit of money but I always thought this one would be doable.

I'm sorry, but I just remembered a more "simpler time" when my older brother and his friends would get their kicks by going to the airport to see "how long it would be until they got stopped for looking 'conspicuous.'"

:lol

Oh, how times have changed!

I know right? Now if some bald guy wearing a tunic pins a flower on your lapel it could be a WMD.

I haven't seen the movie, but the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) has a replica of the Fat Man (Fatman?) bomb in their Eagles Hangar (obviously non-working) (the bomb that is; the hangar works fine). It's in the Top Secret section. They have a section with "top secret" info from WWII, including an ME-109 with the wings removed so it would fit, and a mockup of the bomb. Cool in a creepy way.

When I was in weapons school I got to work on both fat man and little boy. We built 3 of each for japan and when they surrendered, the remaining ones were retired to the training school. They are still in pristine condition and other than being disarmed they are ready to use. Of course there are much more effective weapons today that have replaced them.

The military has got some stuff that would blow your mind and the nuclear deterrent is out dated by the newer less radioactive stuff.

So does anybody happen to have any good non-screen cap pictures of the screen used prop? This is one of my favorite props and I'm more then willing to build one up as I find parts(non-working of course) :D I'd really like to find some good quality photos of the 4 circuit boards surrounding the center of the prop, so I could get the component layout of those correct at least. Other then those I think I could make due with the screen caps.

After all is said and done, I think we should try and ship one to the UK. :lol

Back in the early days of the Sci-Fi and Fantasy Modeler magazine there was an article by a guy that built a very detailed radio controlled model of the Alvin submersible. He was hired by the BBC (I think) to build, and operate an Alvin for a production that they were doing on the Alvin's hunt for the lost A-bomb. He was also hired to make the other models for the show, all of which he boxed up, labeled and shipped to England. He said that one thing he discovered when he was going through customs was never, repeat NEVER! Ship an item through customs labeled "A-BOMB". :lol

What, you mean like 35 years ago when it was still okay to run around in public with toy guns, yelling "Bang, you're dead!", or even using a tree branch or your finger to simulate a gun? :eek :D

A replica of the bomb from "The Manhatten Project" would be absolutely awesome to see, I've always loved that film. The montage of Paul assembling it was so excellently done and I've always loved that group of nerds at the science fair who sweep in to the rescue. I wish you the best in your quest to build this fine piece. Please keep us posted.
